“We have zero intelligence that Putin is interested in a real peace deal right now,” one of the congressional officials said.
Putin is sending representatives to Saudi Arabia for negotiations Tuesday with the U.S. that are aimed at ending the war. But, the six officials said, current intelligence shows Putin still believes he can wait out Ukraine and Europe to eventually control all of Ukraine.
“He thinks he’s winning,” one of the Western intelligence officials said, adding that Russian losses on the battlefield are not pressuring Putin to stop fighting.
Sources, according to the experts, allegedly..
There’s one thing that could get him to change his mind — time
Tell him how old he is, tell him that the USA changes Presidents every four years and that Russia may not take Ukraine for decades. Tell him that each year that passes the chances of him getting sick or tired grows, and the chance of his legacy of an unresolved Ukraine war greater and greater
If this can be proven to him, perhaps narcissism kicks in and he may want to deal instead of keep fighting
Call me crazy, but I don’t think these talks with Putin will actually harbor anything actionable. I don’t see it. From an optics standpoint, it looks bad on the US. But from a policy stand point, I don’t see anything that will happen. There are too many pieces of the puzzle unsolved just to say – “Okay guys, Russia wins, let them take what they have and call it done.”
Trump has never brought peace to anything in his life. I still can’t imagine how millions of America voted for such a chaotic hot mess, TWICE.
No one should be surprised at anything he does at this point. It’s very clear that he’s either a Russian asset at the worst, or at the very least a Russian sympathizer. It’s clear to everyone you probably shouldn’t put someone who aspires to be friends with a dictator in charge of a country, but the American people seem to be out of the loop on that one.
The one thing that gives me hope, is that I kind of suspect the Russian people hate Putin. I’m not an expert, but I find it suspicions that Russia, for all its bluster and military prowess it likes to flaunt, can’t win a war against Ukraine. So either their army is that incompetent, or the people fighting it directly have 0 interest in winning this war. People often look at resistance as loud and vocal, but I think sometimes it’s quiet and sneaky.
Here is the reality of the situation.
Ukraine has only lasted as long as it has because of the firepower the USA is providing it. Therefore, Ukraine’s efforts will only last as long as USA is providing.
But the American electorate, distrustful of institutions that led them into the Iraq and Afghanistan debacle, do not want to commit to involvement in a war far away from our shores for a country we have no formal alliance with. Because of this, they elect Trump, who has come out and stated the USA will no longer provide for Ukraine.
Europeans, having completely neutered their military industrial complexes, will be unable to fill this gap. At least, as things currently stand, they won’t.
Therefore, Russia rightfully has concluded that once the USA pulls out, it’s a matter of time before Ukraine falls.
If the Europeans do not want this outcome, the only choice they have is to switch to a wartime economy and fill the gap the USA leaves behind. If they are unable or unwilling to do this, then Ukraine **will** fall.
How exactly is this a peace deal when one of the country involved in the conflict is absent from the process?
Does Trump think he can force Ukraine to accept the terms made by Russia on paper somehow?
You don’t say. Putin doesn’t want peace, he wants power, and a redux of the Soviet Union.
I mean the man invaded a country without provocation based on his own beliefs he’s entitled to it. He’s not going to fold until he has everything he wants.
And I think he’s smart enough to know at this time, the only way he will win any war in Ukraine is by external forces helping him do that. He can’t win on the ground, and he knows it, or Russia would have won by now.
That being said, it’s wild he even wants to bother with Ukraine. I think it’s mostly for resources and pride. But even if he takes over Ukraine, it would take decades before any kind of real control comes to Russia. The Ukrainians have made it abundantly clear they don’t want a Russian takeover. It’s not going to go away even if Russia gets the keys to the kingdom via USA. People will absolutely make life miserable for Russia and probably continue to sabotage ongoing efforts to assimilate. I don’t condone violence and am not advocating for that, but resistance is quiet, sometimes.
The headline may miss the entire point. “…shows he’s not interested in a real peace deal…” left out a major plurality here. I’m guessing we are all supposed to think that “he’s” is referring to Putin. We are kidding ourselves if we think Trump and his acolytes really care about peace either. This is nothing more than a meeting between mafia dons to break up territory and interests without old fashioned contracts being issued to take out the opposite side.
Putin is going to toy with Trump and play him for a fool. He will find a way to try and humiliate him in all of this. No way is he going to let Trump waltz in and look like a savior by gaining anything preferential to the US and ending the war. If these talks lead to an end of the war it will be to the benefit of Russia and only Russia.
What will happen: US will cut all aid and remove all sanctions from Russia, saying that Ukraine is a “bad actor who doesn’t want peace.” Trump will then declare the war “over” but of course it will continue. Anyone reporting on the continued war in Ukraine will have their White House press credentials removed. WaPo, WSJ and other billionaire media will create a policy not to report on Ukraine for any reason. Discussion of Ukraine will be banned on X and Meta.
Every Republican congressman and White House official will talk about how Trump single handedly ended the war in Ukraine and brought peace to Europe. He will award himself some kind of medal for doing this.
Trump is interested in showing he’s a negotiator, and in money. US already said Europe is welcome to pay for US weapons for Ukraine.
The U.S. on its own can’t effectively reverse sanctions because it wasn’t the buyer of Russian exports anyway.
I’ll take Things that are obvious for 500 Alex. but seriously though we know exactly how it’s going before it shakes out.
As the article says “give his military time to reset and rebuild.”. For Putin his war started in Crimea.
No shit
Trump: “Please. Please. Please. PLEASE let me win a little!”
*“I think he wants to stop the fighting,” Trump said. Asked if he thinks Putin wants all of Ukraine, Trump said, “No, I think he wants to stop.”*
Years of listening to this man and we have to believe he realy believes what Putin tells him, no matter what the intelligence says. Of course he would even ignore the CIA if it went against POTUS’ political objectives of great power balance, damn the interest of smaller nations.
There is no way that we could see this coming. It’s almost like the guy wrote an essay about Ukrainians not being real people. /s
