WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The City of Moundridge encouraging residents to conserve and limit natural gas usage as much as possible through Friday.
Natural gas suppliers have issued flow orders in anticipation of rising demand for natural gas. The city said that even if you don’t adjust your thermostat, the workload on your heater increases as the temperature decreases.
The city offered these tips to help save energy:
Check your furnace filter – make sure it’s clean and properly installed facing the correct direction. Hold off on doing chores – doing laundry or washing dishes can use energy to heat the water and your dryer. If you can, only wash full loads using cold water, air dry your clothes, or even better, wait until the extreme cold weather passes to complete these activities.Use kitchen, bath and other ventilating fans only as needed – in just one hour, these fans can exhaust a house full of warmed air.Remove obstructions or debris from your outdoor vents – check the furnace, gas fireplace and tankless/conventional water heater vents and clear them of obstructions or debris if needed.
The city advises you to keep your thermostat set at 68 degrees in the winter and reduce it by 2 to 3 degrees while you’re away from home or sleeping.
The city also warns to never use gas ranges, ovens or gas grills to heat your home.
“Natural gas smells like rotten eggs for a reason,” said the city. “If your nose picks up this scent, immediately leave the area and call 911 once you’re away from the site.”
