‘You don’t watch the news, how do you keep informed?’
Social media
‘Where does social media get its news from?’
I don’t watch. I have enough going on in my own life, I don’t have the head space for the worries around the world. Whatever is happening wherever else in the world doesn’t alter that I’m a Dad who has to go to work tomorrow morning to put food on the table.
Being purposefully uninformed makes you an idiot and a bad person. Make you you stay informed via trustworthy sources.
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
Only bit of news I like is my weather and traffic. Don’t honestly pay attention to all the stuff with the 2 wars and whatnot going on and whatever on earth that over sized oompa loompa is doing in the states
The last time something truly important happened, I got a text from the government.
you can not watch the news, and be uninformed, or you can watch the news and be misinformed, free choice
Honestly I’m so deep into the end of the curve it’s ridiculous. I legit have stopped caring about all news bevause it’s so bleak. I dunno what’s going on with the world anymore and I’m so much happier for it.
“politics has nothing to do with me” headass
My mild annoyance in headlines is the word ‘amid’. Noticed during the COVID era news outlets used amid ad nauseum. Everything was happening ‘amid’ something. Felt like articles were AI generated.
Also when headlines read like the plot of a Chris Nolan movie with the order of events – “THIS happened AFTER this related thing happened LEADING to THIS OTHER event happening “
I dont watch the news because the news is just people’s opinions and not facts. If I wanted to hear people’s opinions, I would go on reddit
It’s inverted.
I’m trying to block news about America. I’ll check in about four years, see if they are still doing elections
All people talk about is news and politics nowadays. You can just get the info letting people talk at you about it, as biased as it can often be, lol
Becoming so alienated and disillusioned that you switch off is what people like trump and musk hope you will do. Stay informed from a variety of sources, don’t let shit go unnoticed
What about not stopping at the headlines?
I have yet to see a midwit meme where the person who made it wasn’t actually the guy on the left.
Current unimportant events, they may sound important when they’re on the news, but they aren’t.
Unless the news story affects you personally, and I don’t mean indirectly, why the f**k should you or anyone else care.
The world will keep moving forward with or without “news” most of the time, you’re getting half-baked stories that aren’t giving you the full context or even unbiased opinions.
I try to keep track of local news, but I find watching the news in the morning or evening is really bad for mental health
I pay taxes so I don’t have to worry about politics.
I get my news from memes. Then try to decipher what they mean.
I try to keep a baseline knowledge of events but it can be so overwhelming sometimes. It feels better to just limit how much bad news you can take at a time.
Replaced my news doom scrolling with reading theory. Particularly focused on class analysis. It’s wild how rigged the media, political and business establishment is against the working class.
It’s dangerous to think you have all the answers after reading a few books. However once the veil is lifted and you realise just how society is structured to protect the interests of the wealthy and powerful you’ll never read a newspaper or watch a news bulletin in the same way again.
This clip where Noam Chomsky briefly explains the situation to Andrew Marr is absolutely priceless. Particularly the coup de grace at the end!
I swear some of the comments on this thread could turn a guy off democracy.
Getting to the point where I am actively trying to avoid current events
IGNORNCE IS STRENGTH
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
The only thing I care about in the news is this:
Has WW3 started?
No?
Okay whatever
Yes?
Hope my present is a football.
Either watch the news and check multiple sources (don’t just listen to the headlines either)
Or do your own primary research on everything.
Being completely uninformed is the possibility the worst choice you can make.
Equally obsessing over politics can also do more harm than good for your mental health. We’re just human, we can’t process all of this stuff and bear the weight of the whole world on our shoulders.
A balance is needed.
I watch Aba and Preach. Pretty much the only form of news I use😂
Where does “I get my news from satire memes” sit on that curve?
British media is so overwhelmingly transphobic, and also plays into a lot of racist sentiments.
Stay informed, but make sure you aren’t picking up the right wing propaganda.
I’m at the end of this cycle now, the news is just full of shit. If you actually read the news and not just glance at its just so fucking clear to see what viewpoint they are trying to push. This goes for both sides of the spectrum.
I listen to ≈5 hours of news per week during a commute – usually BBC Radio 4 for the lack of adverts, etc. – I do feel very informed on current affairs and it’s the depth of knowledge which I find nice! On multiple occasions where people have brought up a headline point I’ve been able to talk about it in a slightly more nuanced way which feels nice. But yeah, most of it is just depressing
I just get all of my news from Reddit, that’s how I know that the next UK government is gonna be a Farage led Reform with a reanimated Oswald Mosley as the Secretary for Race Relations
Plus our news is pumped full of American stuff so we look better by comparison
