  1. “An Iraqi asylum seeker has been allowed to remain in the UK after his mother refused to hand over an ID document that would enable him to return to his home country.

    The man claimed in 2021 that his safety was at risk if he returned to Iraq because he had been threatened, kidnapped and beaten by the owners of a car that he had been commissioned to repair.

    His appeal against the rejection of his asylum was initially thrown out on the basis that it was now four years since the attack and his safety was no longer at risk if he returned.

    But an upper immigration tribunal overruled that decision after accepting that his mother, who lives in Iraq, was refusing to hand over the civil status identity card (CSID) he needed to return on the basis that she believed his life was still at risk.”

  3. Essentially there’s no evidence from the government that he even ~~has this ID~~ will get this ID back, they’re working off an assumption.

    I’m not sure it’s right to assume that someone can be legally deported, no matter what the moral decision should be.

    The government absolutely needs to follow their own laws. Allowing them to break their own laws just because they’re deporting immigrants is extremely bad, because where will it end?

    (Also the downvotes for saying the government needs to not be allowed to break the law? No wonder this country is going down the shitter)

  6. No one should be allowed to stay in the UK without ID under any circumstances. It is a matter of national security.

  7. Is it really this easy? Perhaps I’ll refuse to ‘hand over’ my driving licence next time I get a speeding fine and see where that gets me…..

  8. The day after he gets a document saying he can stay here permanently he will have that ID by DHL and be on the next plane home to visit his Mum.

  9. Change the laws. You have the numbers to do it. This absurdity and abuse of the Uk needs to end
