As widely reported in mid-December, former speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Luxembourg for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Bulge. The unwanted headline moment came when the 84-year-old slipped on the stairs of the Grand Ducal Palace during a visit and suffered a hip fracture.
The Democrat has a special connection to the pivotal Second World War battle, as her uncle John “Johnny” D’Alesandro was killed in action in the Battle of the Bulge, near the end of the war. She recalled back in 2010 that “not a day goes by” without her father mourning the loss of his brother.
After her fall, Pelosi was first treated in a hospital in Kirchberg, Luxembourg City, and then transferred to the military hospital near Landstuhl in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, where she underwent surgery.
Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel met Pelosi in San Francisco at the beginning of this week. Bettel thanked the former speaker for her presence in Luxembourg to commemorate the battle anniversary. Pelosi assured Bettel she is doing well after her fall at the palace. Pelosi thanked the Luxembourg authorities for their support following her accident.
