The Rwandan government has condemned Belgium for its “aggressive campaign” to prevent the country from securing development funding. Belgium urged the European Union to freeze direct budget support to Rwanda until it “breaks links with the Tutsi-led M23 rebels” making advances in eastern DR Congo.

Rwanda has described the action by Belgium as a “political stance” and warned that it would not be “bullied or blackmailed into compromising its national security”.

A Rwandan Foreign Ministry statement said: “No country in the region should have its development finance jeopardized as a tool of leverage.”

President Felix Tshiseked of DR Congo – with regional and world leaders – has accused Rwanda of supporting the rebel incursion in the mineral-rich region of DR Congo.
