Honestly what idiots are in charge. Has to be bribes involved. Otherwise why would you hire them. I know it’s tinfoil hat but come on
Taking bets now on how much over the 671 million budget they go, closest guess gets a room of their choosing in either hospital
For Fups Sake
Well if it costs (I can’t remember the exact figure) half a million for a bike shed, the cost of these hospitals are a bargain!!!!
Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
At least they might be motivated to get their act together to finish
Well at least our politicians and public servants are integrated on being absolutely stupid. Just need to integrate the other bits now.
There must be Epstein style tapes involved at this point
The procurement process for awarding government projects is not fit for purpose
Oh sweet Jesus
Sadly the mind doesn’t boggle. The same old story of politicians & property developers jumping together onto the gravy train to drain the public purse as much as they can, while producing a bunch of dogshit at ever-spiralling costs and zero accountability for any of it.
Not being smart but why is how much it costs to build a hospital in one jurisdiction relevant to what contracts they get in another?
Different governments, different contracts too no doubt.
Naked corruption

Whilst I have zero sympathy for BAM who seem to be excellent at gouging there is an argument to say that those who wrote the tender without protections for public money deserve the most criticism.
Sure there will always be design changes mid project but it’s pretty clear the tender process for the children’s hospital was a kids drawing of a rugby ball with the word HOSTIPAL along the top and the part saying redesign clause filled in with the words ‘yeah whatever’.

Has to be bribery involved
One thing the island of Ireland can all agree on is don’t do that.
There is not many building contractors in Ireland who are capable of being able to deliver a project to that value outside of BAM.
I mean… They definitely have experience at least. 😂
Never finished a project on time, or within budget
Back handers brown envelopes.
BAM isn’t at fault for these massive bills, the projects are getting tendered off crap and unfinished designs. If their claims for payment weren’t legitimate, then they wouldn’t be getting the money. Either that or the projects QS (Line sight) are terrible at their job
671 million ~ you better quadruple that shit 😂
The gravy train of multinationals providing billions in tax will end, and what will we have to show for it? High speed rail? Walkable clean cities? A robust affordable childcare service? Nuclear power? Nah, we’ll have shite overpriced infrastructure that’s crumbling as soon as it’s completed. We have pissed away so much money it’s actually terrifying thinking about what this government would do without the (enormous) tax base.
Being good at winning tenders and being cost effective in producing the end result are not necessarily related. BAM won in Ireland because on paper they are cheap. It is relatively easy to be cheap on paper particularly if the spec and conditions are wooly.
Politicians lining their pockets. The party must’ve been great
Fair enough that BAM have put the hand in, and the project has gone well over budget. That’s pretty evident.
What I don’t get is – the negative sentiment and outrage towards BAM in isolation. Pretty evident that this project was not designed properly; which has a) resulted in a substantive number of variations b) elements have been constructed and probably torn down due to design changes c) contract not signed to my knowledge, as evidently with all the changes – this has caused a material delay in handover.
Contractors will typically charge open book costs, plus prelims, overheads and profit (plus extension of time). About time we start directing this frustration towards what appears to be an incompetent civil service project team and probably an incompetent design team (or not fully informed or scoped design team). Will anyone in civil service be held to account, no. In private, they would have been sacked long ago.
Sure, BAM have stuck the hand in – but I would say a big chunk of this is cost inflation and variations. Very frustrating when people see headlines and automatically think it’s greed when they don’t understand how procurement is conducted, and how projects are delivered.
