Forgive the ignorance, I come from warm climes. Limited available brands (of affordable range) in my area as well.

So the site mentions upto 0 degrees for low activity or – 35 with moderate activity. It is also made of 70% gray down and 30% feather.

It doesn't mention anything about how much power fill.

Will this jacket do?

I had recently bought a 700 power fill jacket from uniqlo, unfortunately it only reaches the waist, and I only learned recently from this sub that jackets must go below the butt to save yourself from freezing temps…

  1. Hat and gloves more important than jacket but yeah itd be more than fine.

  2. Where in Finland? In The south and other coastal areas you’re more likely to need wind and waterproof outer layer, than super warm.

For physical activities that jacket doesn’t Look really comfortable either, so depends a lot on where in Finland and what you’re planning to do.

Personally I would get a wind/water proof (not just repellent) jacket that’s big enough for warm layers underneath. Then it’s easy to adjust your clothing according to whatever weather there happens to be, whether it’s +5°c and raining horizontally, or – 15c and snowing

  3. Most Finnish ladies have this kind of a jacket nowadays so I’m pretty sure you’ll do just fine.

If it’s -20 and you intend on spending hours outside doing basically nothing, then sure it’ll be cold and you need more layers. But if you are normally walking around the city in -5, you’ll be fine.

  4. Just use the uniqlo jacket if it’s not one of those light ones. That’s what I’ve been using for a decade here.

  5. Probably will be fine for most of the time, but good to know that weather changes a lot.

Depending where in Finland you are, there maybe relatively warm (close to zero degrees) but wind is freezing. Or in the north may be so cold that no jacket is enough and you will need something warm under your jacket also (merino wool is the best).

Also warm mittens, warm beanie (also merino wool for me) and scarf (I use neckerchief which is also merino wool).

  6. It will be fine. I have a similar one, and while it’s been a bit too warm in the south this year, as we haven’t had cold temperatures, it kept me warm last winter.

Just add warm layers underneath if you get cold. And a hat and mittens.

  7. Jacket long enough to cover your butt is more important in -25 weather, which is rare, so most of the time you would be fine with a short jacket. Long jacket is in style among young people, but who knows what’s stylish next December.

You probably meant reaches hips, as waist is where your navel is and that’s very short, I don’t think that short winter jackets exist?

  8. That should be okay. Ofcourse it also depends whether you are in Kittilä or Helsinki during december. One might have +5 and one might have -35. Finland is a large country and south/north have very different climates at times and the wather might easily vary by 30 degrees between the two. It’s impossible to predict the weather also. This year has been unusually warm and not many cold days in the south atleast.

  9. Seems ok to me, the key is to get one with real down insulation and not some polyester padding shit that does not insulate anything. However, if you are not used to the cold at all, layering is the most important thing, the jacket will not do much alone.

Get yourself some good merino wool underlayers, a wool shirt, wool socks, warm hat, warm gloves (insulated mittens for max warmth) and some good winter shoes with a sole that has traction and you’re good to go. Decrease layering if you feel too warm and increase if too cold.

  10. Not good for sleeping on a bench during winter (low activity in below 0 degrees), keep this in mind. But should be good for sleeping outside in spring 🙂

  11. Layers my friend, wearing sleeping bags can’t be shredded down to regulate your temperature. I prefer to wear a good base layer of thermals, good sweater, down thin puffer, and then a good 3L jacket but you could just fine a weather proof for that layer.

  12. Covering your butt is a good idea, also a hood is something I now insist on when buying a winter coat. Wind can sneak up from the hem upwards of the jacket is just waist high. A hood helps regulate heat around the head, and is a must in windy weather.

  13. No one can tell you that, you are the only one who feels how cold you are.

  14. Helsinki is full of ppl with this style of long jacket

  15. This is similar to what I wear every day!

If you are doing outdoorsy active things tho I would recommend adding padded pants and a shorter jacket.

  16. The feeling of cold and hot are very personal qualities. Sometimes, it can change for me within a season. So, you will never know until you try. People are creaking out that cold can kill them. So, it can, but not in the city where you hypothetically won’t stay outside longer than a few hours.

  17. Everyone feels weather differently, but sure you’ll be warm enough with this. Maybe too warm. Personally I have never owned a long jacket or a down jacket, and have survived several decades of Helsinki weather. I have a teenager who presently doesn’t even have a winter jacket. So far she’s claiming it’s plenty enough.

  18. It’s probably fine but I would also invest in some thermal base layers. The Heat tech range at Uniqlo is really good.

  19. Duck down and feathers are incredibly cruel. Please consider a more ethical choice for your clothing

  20. Get /something/ kinda warm and cheap and several sweaters, maybe an inside layer too. You can buy some budget stuff in a general store here later if it won’t keep you warm enough.

  21. You’ll be fine with what you’ve got. Please don’t buy big coats unnecessarily just to throw away after your trip, you are not going to the Antarctic to survive outdoors 247. We have heating indoors, in buses, if you walk at all you generate heat and then you’ll feel sweaty. I’ve never owned a long coat in my life, it’s fine. People give advice as if you need to prepare to sit still outside for hours, it’s unnecessary.

  22. OP people are asking where in Finland you are going, but it would also be good to know where you are from, or at least what kind of weather you are used to.

  23. I have this exact puffer. I just wear a sweater underneath and I’m good.

  24. The below waist jacket isn’t neccessary, but can be nice. My wife likes using one, but I have never even owned one. Where are you travelling? For example Helsinki is alot warmer than Lappi at that time of the year.

  25. Winter clothing generally is lot about layering, based on variables (activity, duration, temperature, windspeed, + personal variables).
Consider long johns (or what was long underwear called in english) / thermal leggins as one layer + something with sleeves + (indoors) top layer with sleeves + jacket.

  26. If you’re not on the coast you’ll fit right in, the inland is more dry so water repellent is enough. For the coast you might want to either go for a water proof big jacket that you can put a lot of layers under, one that is water proof not just water repellent, or go with that and have a raincoat that fits over that. Down and feather are good materials, we use those in our winter jackets most of the time, if you’re standing still it can get cold in under 0° temperatures, but as long as you’re walking or pacing or something that should be fine until like -20° and usually December stays around -10° to -20° so you’re good, the -30° comes in january and february.

Also general tip: always be ready to put on or remove layers, the houses are well insulated so indoors can be quite hot compared to the outdoors, you want the option to strip down to something like a t shirt and long pants when indoors

  27. Your Uniqlo jacket will be fine, just make sure you have all the accessories needed (thermal underwear, a warm sweater, gloves and hats).

  28. I think it’s more important to think which part of Finland are you going to spend the December. Helsinki and south might be anything between maybe +5 – -15-20*C, average in Helsinki being around -5-10*C, while up north might be regularly around -20-30*C.

  29. didnt i just read an article about men robbing a bank wearing these?
