  10. I love the books my daughter gets from the Imagination Library! They’re great to get her into reading and her older brother reads them to her! This would be absolutely gutting.

  11. This program introduces people to books in the home but it’s not cheap and it is a direct giveaway.

    So long as public libraries are properly funded (which usually isn’t the case, I know), that’s a viable and appropriate alternative.

    Example: California promised 50m to this program a couple years ago. Then proposed cutting the remaining 5m or so to public libraries.

    I didn’t realize the imagination library cost was funded outside of private charities.

    I’ll probably get downvoted but I agree this shouldn’t be a taxpayer expense. Doesn’t it compete with libraries that are already taxpayer funded?

    Doesn’t shipping what I assume are brand new books only useful to the kids for a year or two create a lot of material waste as well?

  13. For years and years the local library system in my small town in North Carolina have had cards automatically made for students in the public school system that allows them to check out books without accruing late fees and give them access to online homework help stuff.

    Within the past few months, through very underhanded and secretive ways with local politicians, very far right Christians took over the majority of the library board (not the library itself, but people who govern what happens in the library) and yesterday they voted to abolish the student cards (over 6,000 of them) because it doesn’t teach children responsibility (their real reason being they don’t want them to have access to LGBTQ books the library has).

    I feel like we’re living in hell.

  19. Ohio lawmakers are considering dropping public library funding from the budget, and that would do the same thing since The Imagination Library is mostly paid for by public libraries in this state. Hopefully someone’s told her about that.

  27. Yeah great plan, let’s STOP kids from reading for free when we know reading improves their overall knowledge and brain power. Can someone please explain why we would be doing this? There is NO acceptable reason for this. Dolly has funded many organizations that truly helped people, whether you agree with it or not.

    Why isn’t she funding say 50 years of her idea?

    The state matched funds for the last 2 years (only, it seems) and now they don’t have it in the budget. The article didn’t give a dollar amount.

    So it will be operating like it did the previous 32 years before the state matched any funds.
