  1. I wonder when we will pay off that bridge and they can finally close the toll like they promised? Any day now!

  2. Bridge well paid, basically just robbing people now.

  3. Tolls are a great idea as they charge based on actual road use. Thats why they are standard everywhere.

  4. When will the USC be abolished? That was supposed to be temporary as well…

  5. We are a country full of pushovers and the whole world seems to know it now

  6. Meanwhile your road tax covers more than is spent on road maintenance/upgrades

    Tax on fuel.

    VRT

Stealth taxes. Constant and never ending taxation.

    all voted for by you.

  7. This is an insane amount of money. I think people underestimate the difference between a million and a billion, nevermind two and a half billion.

  8. There was a documentary made about the M50 toll years ago. The Irish government got fuck all money out of it. It was owned by a group of people including the Roche family (Roches Stores) and the Spanish royal family. I don’t know if that’s still the case but 20 years ago it was definitely true.

  9. I mean if they stop the tolling they will just raise taxes somewhere else? Not sure it’s worth the fuss.

  10. How many more years until we get the price of a children’s hospital out of it?

  11. Could have bought the whole bridge for 400m at the time – the ultimate brown-envelope trap there. Thanks Bertie and FF.

  12. What would happen if we all, en masse, say tomorrow, cancelled our accounts with flow and demanded our government get rid of the toll?

    I’ll happily start the campaign.

I’ve paid around €25k in tolls in that period. It’s fcking ridiculous.

  13. We could almost build a children’s hospital for that price!

  14. Could build a children’s hospital with that sort of cash. Maybe not though..

  15. The first Mersey (road) tunnel opened in 1934. It was built with private money, a kind of PPP scheme. The investors were given a concession for tolling for 50 yrs, to recoup their money and make a profit. 91 yrs later there is still a toll.

  16. And if you crash into the barrier they’ll charge you for the repairs

  17. Jaysus, another couple years and you could buy a state of the art children’s hospital

  18. 200 a month for me on this road alone. I’m so glad I pay road tax too.

  19. That is a WHOPPING 338 436 euro PER DAY. Whoever’s getting that money made the deal of a lifetime. Every now and then I get irritated that we have to pay to cross that path and always wondered that surely that has been already paid off and this place definitely makes more money than the maintenance costs.
