They were married for 10 years and had two beautiful children, Davyd and Uliana. Andrii left his carpenter workshop and his family to sign up and had been fighting in the east since April 2022. He took part in the defense of Kherson, Mykolaiv, Donetsk, and Kharkiv regions. In Donetsk region in 2022, he was wounded and his rehabilitation lasted six months, and then he returned to the front lines.
On August 5, Olena was supposed to travel to Kharkiv to see him, but on August 2, he suffered severe shrapnel wounds during a mortar attack.
“His mates gave him an 80% chance of survival. He remained conscious until the very end, fighting until the last moment. His legs were badly torn by shrapnel. He asked to tell me that he loved me and the children very much,” Olena recalls.
Olena traveled to Kharkiv alone to bring her husband’s body home. Until she saw Andrii with her own eyes, she refused to believe he was gone and did not tell their children anything.
“My conversation with my son began with me saying, ‘Davyd, I have to tell you something I don’t want to say.’ But he interrupted me and said, ‘That our dad was killed?’ I just nodded. He burst into tears and didn’t say another word. In that moment, my child became years older.”
Now, Olena is learning how to live without Andrii—taking care of their children and handling daily life on her own. When waves of grief hit, she doesn’t hold back her tears. And when her children ask why she is crying, she answers honestly: “Because I miss your father.” Then, Davyd and Uliana wrap her in their arms, and for a moment, the sorrow loosens its grip.
