They threat with giving up their strategic positions and infrastructure that allows for power projection in Africa and the Middle East, just because they don’t like how we deal with social media over here. And people take this seriously? I thought that “the art of the deal” was pretty dumb, but it seems to work every single time, which is very depressing.

  8. There is room for improvement, but JD Vance is an opponent of free speech. He recently defended Trump banning the Associated Press from the White House for continuing to use the name “Gulf of Mexico” and mocked the person who asked about it. Similarly, he doesn’t seem very concerned about the lack of free speech in Russia.

  19. The level of an own-goal this would be for the US is ridiculous. The giant base at Rammstein is their main logistics hub for the whole Europe and Middle Eastern region. Without it, their ability to pressure Iran or help Israel would be severely hindered.

    It’s like their speed running how to dismantle their own systems of dominance from the inside. First they destroyed the single most effective for of Soft Power by closing USAID, now they’re working on destroying America’s Hard Power capabilities…

    1) Following Nazi Germany’s defeat in WW2, US troops were placed in Germany to limit the expansion of USSR into defeated territories as well as reduce the risk of a return of Nazism

    2) Germany has laws that make it illegal to display Nazi imagery, deny the Holocaust and express support for Nazism

    3) The US govt is now threatening to remove the troops that were placed there to limit expansion of USSR and Nazism unless laws disallowing Nazism are removed. Incidentally, the German political parties that are running up to (and in some cases leaping over) the line of Nazism are also sympathetic to and likely being financed by Russia, the successor of the USSR

    Make it make sense?

  33. Friendly reminder that most US troops in Germany arent stationed there to “defend Germany” but to project US power globally.

    Rammstein is the most important US military logistics hub outside of the US (from where allegedly the US also controls most of its global drone operations for legal reasons). Landstuhl is the biggest US military hospital outside of the US.

    Both the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and European command (EUCOM) are located in Stuttgart.

    Withdrawing troops there would hurt the US militarily at least as much as Germany, if not more.
