I would suggest that Zelensky not sign anything until obtaining guarantees from the US that the US is going to help them first and not just partition half the country off to Russia during "peace negotiations" as soon as this thing is signed. Once Trump has the mineral rights, Ukraine doesn't have anything he wants anymore. As far as Trump is concerned, these rights are payment for assistance already delivered, not any new assistance.

If Ukraine is smart, they would condition the entire agreement on Ukraine maintaining it's complete sovereignty, based on their 2013 borders, and state they are in no position to grant any rights otherwise; that it is not in the country's best interest to grant "pro-rata basis" mineral rights on the basis of amount of country maintained. It may not have a lot of minerals left afterwards, but if it conditions granting the US mineral rights on winning, I bet the US will miraculously find a way for Ukraine to win the war, and probably pretty quickly.

Maybe I'm cynical, or maybe I'm just a realist; it's hard to tell the difference sometimes.

  5. What good is an American guarantee? The guarantee will be worthless if Putin decides to invade Ukraine in 6 months or a year because Trump will do nothing but blame Ukraine for starting it.

  9. I would not trust Trump to continue to hold up his end of the deal, but he will be very demanding that Ukraine honor theirs.

    This was his routine practice when he was in “real estate” and there is no reason to think that has changed.

  12. As a European I can’t believe Europes leaders have not already sent Ukraine a much better deal to put Zelensky in a huge negotiation position over Trump.
