I wonder when Leo is going to be caught smoking a joint so we can just legalise it.
Seriously, are we still charging people for dabbling in a bit of green in this day and age? Give the lad a break and time to change our stance on cannabis, too many people rely on it to help them cope with terminal illnesses and/or other diseases such as crohn’s & epilepsy.

Kids get caught with a few grams and their address gets plastered on the papers. Special treatment or what?
Ah yes, over 13,000.
Was he involved in the Regency hotel investigation?
Note the headline doesn’t specify the amount in comparison to what they (RTE) regularly do:
Not trying to throw up a conspiracy, but nearly every news article contains the exact amount (pending investigation), but this case seems to omit or obfuscate that
Can anyone tell me why it’s being referred to as “over €13,000 worth”, when it was actually €600k worth that was found?
Am I remembering the figures wrong, or what?
Do I read right that he gets legal aid? Ah here
Nothing wrong with a smoke kid
How does someone have over half a million worth of cannibis and only get charged with possession?
Canadian whose family was originally from Ireland here. In Canada we have legalized cannabis at all levels of government. The world has not fallen apart, in fact it’s a multi-billion dollar industry that makes up a fair piece of our GDP. I have many friends who struggled with alcoholism who have quit drinking entirely and just use cannabis now and their lives are better for it. Government loves the tax revenue. There’s really been zero downside and a zillion upsides.
I think the reason why the article quotes 13000 Euro is because the specific charge he pleaded guilty to, 15A of the misuse of drugs act is for amounts specifically over €13000.

When this was originally on RTE, the article headline was:
[Former garda superintendent charged over cannabis seizure](https://www.rte.ie/news/2021/1004/1250646-john-murphy-court/)
and within that article:
> The former senior garda is charged with possessing cannabis worth **more than €13,000** in north Dublin on 29 September.
Funnily enough, the RTE twitter account specified the amount:
> [A retired Garda superintendent has been charged **over a €600,000 cannabis seizure** at his home in Dublin last week](https://twitter.com/rtenews/status/1444996286000816132?lang=en)

Ireland should do the same!
For background, his retirement party was insightful: https://www.independent.ie/regionals/herald/entertainment/around-town/top-detective-celebrates-retirement-in-style-with-pals-at-new-aviva-stadium-27952338.html
It was 600k. Strange how it’s suddenly 13k
I think the reason why the article quotes 13000 Euro is because the specific charge he pleaded guilty to, 15A of the misuse of drugs act is for amounts specifically over €13000.
https://revisedacts.lawreform.ie/eli/1977/act/12/section/15A/revised/en/html
Section 15 of the misuse of drugs act is the charge for unlawful possession of drugs for sale and supply.
https://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1977/act/12/enacted/en/print#sec15
Then they later revised the act and added a separate offence which is “15A” which is for amounts over €13000.
In simple terms if the drugs are valued under 13k, you are charged with Section 15.
If the drugs are over 13k in value, you are charged with a different offence, 15A.
