Can we finally ban smoking from public transport stops in Switzerland? It’s frustrating to have no choice but to inhale secondhand smoke just because I’m waiting for my train.

Publics spaces like Hardbrücke Bahnhof in Zürich should be smoke-free, especially in areas where people are forced to wait in close proximity. It’s 2025—shouldn’t clean air in public spaces be a basic right by now?

  1. It kinda is already restricted compared to before. It’s mostly only allowed next to these signs where you could also find an ashtray. So why do these people not even use the ashtray that is provided right next to them?

  2. Yup, agree 100%, I HATE walking past clouds of second-hand smoke in public areas like this. Smoking is one of the most stupid things on this planet that people can so easily do to themselves and has absolutely zero benefits. To defend the right to smoke is simply to defend your right to do self-harm, because unlike for example alcohol, you cannot ‘smoke in moderation’ without serious negative impact to your health.

As a society we should be moving to banning smoking forever so that future generations never get hooked in this death cycle, but tobacco companies are too powerful and governments get too much tax revenue from them. At the very least, it should be banned from smoking in all public places.

  3. We need to ban trains at smoke stops.

    Except for Olten.

  4. What I don’t get is “How normal it is” to just dump cigarettes everywhere. I see smokers smoking in the city, in the forest, and when they’re done they just dump it on the ground.

Those same people (for most) wouldn’t throw their PET bottle on the ground when they’re done drinking, or their sandwich package when they’re done eating.

But, even though cigarette butts are even worse than bottles and food packaging, they act like it’s totally normal.

  5. I think you can incentivize this away. Like in Singapore. Make it like 1000CHF fine per cigarette butt thrown on the ground and people will listen.

  6. I totally agree, the society should move towards the direction of smoke-free, especially for a society like Switzerland.

And then you realize how Philip Morris International, Japanese Tobacco International , British American Tobacco (huge tobacco conglomerates) are major tax payers…and then you see a dilemma…

  7. A stronger law enforcement for littering and more expansive.

  8. I don’t like inhaling smoke, but I hate the litter. I will vote for a ban 100% of the time on all smoking because smokers done respect the community

  9. They should reintroduce smoker wagons for a few years just for OP to feel happy with the status quo again

  10. We banned smoking but you can’t ban selfish idiots.

  11. Smoking kills – but why does it have to take so long ???
