The Croatian Embassy in the United Kingdom has issued a warning to Croatian citizens traveling to the UK, informing them that they will soon require special authorization for entry.

“From April 2, 2025, Croatian citizens visiting the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for a short stay must obtain an entry permit called ‘Electronic Travel Authorisation’ (ETA) before traveling,” the embassy stated on its official Facebook profile, reports tportal. The full announcement follows:

The UK has begun implementing an electronic immigration system, requiring visitors from around the world to obtain an entry permit electronically before arriving in the country. This system, known as Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), will apply to all EU citizens, including Croatian nationals, from April 2, 2025.

Eligible travelers must apply for an ETA through a dedicated application, which will be available from March 5, 2025. Detailed information about the application process, requirements, and exemptions can be found on the official UK government website.

Since this system falls under the jurisdiction of UK authorities, the Croatian Embassy in London is not authorized to provide guidance on using the UK government’s application, completing travel forms, or other related inquiries. Additionally, the embassy cannot influence decisions made by UK authorities regarding ETA issuance.

Travelers requiring a visa for a short visit to the UK will still need to obtain one, as ETA does not replace visa requirements. British and Irish citizens, dual nationals holding British and Irish passports, individuals with approved residence in the UK, and those exempt from immigration control do not need an ETA. Furthermore, travelers transiting through the UK without passing border control (within the same airport) are also exempt.
