Electric cars: Positive news for EV owners as plan to boost number of public charge points unveiled

  1. Excellent. Right now the only thing holding me back from driving an EV is the poor state of our charging infrastructure outside of major cities.

I really hope that this really will include proper investment in infrastructure in more rural areas though and this goes beyond just talk. I go on regular holidays to more rural parts of the UK and rapid charging infrastructure in places like that is absolutely dismal.

For the past several years I’ve checked Zap Map for areas I’ve been on holiday in and only a couple of my UK holidays would have been truly practical with an EV without a lot of stress.

  2. The real challenge will be supplying them. EV charging along with air source heat pumps for new houses is going to put a huge demand on the grid.

  3. If they really wanted to shift EVs they’d do away with the VAT tbh.

Rather than increasing the cost of public chargers by putting VAT on them last year

  4. Plans are very different to implementation. EV charging points in cities are already causing major issues and we’re only at the start of it all. Every big EV charging project I know of in London and Birmingham has either gone massively over budget or been abandoned entirely. Not sure about other cities but have to imagine it is similar. It is very difficult to supply large quantities of electricity over and above what the grid is already providing.

  5. the end of the decade, another 8 years….

hopefully by then the price of cars will come down to reasonable levels.

there are plenty of us who do not give a stuff about getting an SUV or leasing a audi or bmw, we just want a cheap and reliable car.

  6. I wish there was a way to book a slot with a hefty penalty if you don’t turn up.

I also think they should ban having to sign up to a network.

I’ve got a car through Onto so I can use a ton of different networks, but not all. I also live in London so there’s loads about, but it can still be tricky to get a charge soemtimes.

Fortunately I’ve just had a kid so I’m up at all hours and can charge in the middle of the night.
