This photo floats about the internet from time to time, and people usually assume she’s eyeing up the soldiers, but fabric was rationed at this time, so I think she’s fascinated by the pleats in the kilt. She maybe trying to work out how to recreate that at home with limited material, look at how simple her own skirt is. She’s also maybe interested in the heavier fabric and in the tartan pattern, maybe she’s trying to figure out how the colours have been blended together, again, maybe she’s trying to figure out how to recreate that at home. I think she could also be impressed by how heavy the wool kilts are compared to her own skirt.

    Fashion history is sometimes seen as unimportant, but it can offer a cool insight into so many socioeconomic factors of a time period!
