  1. One judge allowed a 54-year-old Zimbabwean woman’s appeal against deportation, despite evidence that she would “do and say almost anything to try to fabricate a means to remain in the UK”.

I guess I can lie about everything too, mortgage forms, work experience. That’s what our justice system allows.

    Sigh.

  2. Quelle surprise. Welcome to Starmers dystopian UK, where British citizens come last.

  3. When are these activist judges going to be investigated?

  4. Sounds like just the kind of person we want living in the county, a habitual liar prepared to do anything to get their way,

  5. We need to start removing some of these judges. This is getting beyond a joke. You lied, you got caught lying and you then are allowed to win. We teach our kids not to lie. Should be teaching them to lie- when you lie you get what you want.

  6. Should be an automatic rejection and deportation if it’s found out they lied

  7. The last example here is pretty ridiculous. Does the Telegraph seriously expect the government to deport someone to Gaza given its current state + the fact that the ceasefire is likely to collapse soon meaning they have a fairly high chance of dying?

We may as well just hang them ourselves if we were to do that. It’s insane.

Anyway: without linking to the actual court documents we’re left to the extremely biased and low-quality Telegraph to interpret the reasons why each individual was allowed to stay meaning it’s hard to really make an evaluation in most of the cases.

In the case of the woman from Zimbabwe and the guy who’d been living here for 25 years I think it makes some sense to let them stay here (depending on the contents of the political statements of the woman-which the Telegraph has not bothered to expand upon because they don’t care about good reporting), but some of the other cases seem more dubious on the surface.

Ultimately, though, this is another example of low-quality reporting as part of an editorial crusade to get Britain to abandon its human rights commitments and let the next reactionary Westminster government that’ll probably win in 2029 strip us of our rights which have already degraded in key respects in my life time (that is, in the 21st Century).

  8. >24. It is not apparent that the Judge directed herself in line with Lucas and Uddin. We have regard to equivalent guidance from Lord Glennie in TF (Iran) v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2018] CSIH 58 about assessing credibility where an appellant’s account may contain lies, in particular at [48] :

    >*“Any court or tribunal must be very careful not to dismiss an appeal just because an appellant has told lies. For reasons we have already set out, the judge should not jump too readily to the conclusion that because the appellant has told lies about some matters then his credibility on all matters is fatally undermined”.*

How does an appellant lying *not* fatally undermine their credibility on all matters? With such a low burden of proof for an approval, how is this stance conductive to a proper process?

  9. So is this an invitation for people to lie and commit fraud then cite this judgement as a defence?

  10. Most of the refugee claims are outright lies and it wouldn’t be fair to deport only that lady while all others are still in the UK.

Many refugees go back to their countries for holidays while claiming that they face danger there.

  11. I don’t understand these rules. I’ve had several family members try to move here from Guyana they pay to put themselves through uni, pay full price for doctors, have to pay basic rate tax on all earnings etc etc then after 4 years or whatever when they try to apply for citizenship they get rejected and have to leave.

It’s like the benifits system where you have loads of struggling families or disabled people trying to survive on breadcrumbs and then somehow you get junkies and layabouts who seem to get paid an absolute fortune.

The government must have a very strange idea of what an ideal citizen should be.

  12. While i am sure some do, this is the telegraph. Are there any sources less likely to be presenting facts in such a way as to fit a narrative?

  13. Article cites like 4 examples, each with rather scandalous claims that have since been debunked or explained as hyperbole.

The main part of the article is just saying that judges **must** take appeals seriously, regardless of whether asylum claimant has lied previously. It’s not claiming that all asylum seekers lie.

Ofcourse there has to be a reference to the chicken nugget guy, despite the fact that his real claim is that his child has severe autism and requires care. But saying that might not sound as outrageous as chicken nuggets.

Guy who’s spent 25 years living in this country says that he has no family or social ties back in Sri Lanka and taking away from his established family life in the UK would be cruel. Well that just sounds too reasonable. Let’s make it sound like the guy is a conman.

Really, Telegraph. Journalism used to be an honourable profession.

  14. But telegraph gets to still print a newspaper despite lying repeatedly?

  15. Shit like this is just free outrage and recruitment for Farage and company. It’s ridiculous that the govt can’t see that people see this and then decide to vote for whom they see as the only person willing to do anything about it.

Immigration has been a tool used to tell economic lies to the people for too long.

100 people earn $1 each the country has a gdp of 100$. We bring in 10 immigrants to work for 50 cents and now we have a 110 people and a gdp of $105. Hey look at our government we raised gdp by 5%!

Lying self serving scum is what most politicians are. Led by donkeys. I understand immigration is needed, but unchecked immigration of unskilled migrants that don’t share the same values is just causing hidden subculture groups that cause problems.

  16. The system is obviously completely broken at this point , it needs to have a complete overhaul for the public to have any faith in this government.

  17. Apparently we don’t have an illegal immigration problem and it’s all fabrication by the far right

  18. Oh well, with immigration at best part of a million a year what does a few extra lying gits matter.

And then people wonder why sewage is being pumped into the sea, there’s a housing shortage and they can’t get an appointment with their GP.

  19. Not sure how this still makes news. It’s just standard procedure at this point. We need to get rid of all the pro-asylum judges sitting on these tribunals, and get people in who are *actually* impartial.

  20. Such low hanging fruit to crack down on that would take the wind out of the sails of guys like Nigel and right wing populist movements but they just keep leaning into it all.

  21. Any lying on applications should result in immediate and permanent rejection.

It’s absolutely mental that even has to be said.

  22. Surely common sense would dictate lying while claiming asylum should disavow the claim.

  23. It’s the Telegraph. Consider the bias. Remember how many lies we’ve had over the last 14 years and nothing happened?

Remember the aslyum seekers aren’t to blame. It’s the people in charge that have created a broken system and are the ones who should be punished.

  24. Recently lost my job after 40 years of paying into the system, more than a decade of those serving in the armed forces. My home may soon follow, as I’ve burned through all my savings trying to keep everything as normal as possible for my children while I try and find a new job.

Lost a fair bit of pride and dignity too now i’m on job seekers allowance, the first time I’ve claimed anything from the state since leaving school, and now trying to navigate the hell that is the benefits maze.

No one seems to be throwing themselves at me to offer me a hotel or free clothing or food.

After reading shit like this, my current plan is to go France, throw away my passport and sneak back into the UK, ensuring I get caught and pretending I don’t understand English.

Can’t be any worse off than I am now.

  25. Step one deport

Step two permanently ban them from the UK

    Step three profit?

  26. It honestly makes you despair about how any law is going to fix this when these kind of peo immigration judges just keep letting them stay no matter what

  27. We will reap what we sow. Our demise is by design and this is telling evidence.

  28. And they wonder why reform is gaining such traction. There’s going to be left wing people left at this rate

  29. Genuine question, what’s the latest information on the asylum hotels?

I have one about 2 minutes from my home and there’s just…nothing. I go to work at 5 and you have people biking towards it/around it with no lights on. There’s groups of men, and only ever men, walking around the nearby area together and hanging out around the front. We’ve had a few follow my missus home to our front door and someone we know actually had someone come into their property and had to get the police to get them out.

Is it an abandoned scheme? Are they going home? Are they going to stay here? Where’s the money coming from?

  30. Must admit I’m getting sick and tired of hearing the same shit all the time with illegal immigrants and them not being deported

  31. Oh look, more ragebait BS from the telegraph. Please stop falling it for folks, they’re manipulating you with this stuff.

  32. The amount of media coverage given to this is insane, it makes people think this is a much larger issue than it really is.

Why does no one ever question the sheer lack of news about the economy, and how its pretty much not gone anywhere for the past 20 years. It’s insane that people can’t tell that the real nation defining issues are being purposely suppressed whilst we get bombarded with useless shite about immigrants and asylum seekers.
