So, Imagine if your house is on fire, with your wife and kids trapped on the top floor, and the Fire department arrives to rescue them. But first you need to sign a contract that hands-over half the deed of the house to the fire department or else they’ll just drive away.
Of course, this is a cynical comparison to Trump’s Mafia extortion attempt on Ukraine. Let’s put it in another context :
A cruise ship, headed for Alaska and full of American tourists, is sinking off the BC coastline and only the Canadian Coast Guard is there to save the passengers. But first every passenger has to sign over half of their 401K to the Canadian government or else you’ll go down with the ship. Oh, and act fast because you don’t have much time.
Is this how the MAGA culture wants the world to conduct itself ? Because Mafia tactics have never made any part of the world a happier place to life.
Come to think of it, when 9/11 happened Canada could have easily held the stranded passengers captive in Halifax and Gander in exchange for something ‘transactional’ – but Canada didn’t. If you have to ask yourself “why didn’t they?” then you’re part of the problem.
