STEUBENVILLE, Ohio. — As spring approaches, the Franciscan Square Rink is closing for the season, marking the end of a successful winter for the popular local attraction. Organizers reflected on the achievements of the rink’s second year, noting a significant increase in visitors.
“It did great. It’s the second year that we’re here, and it did absolutely awesome,” said Philip Rook, Director of Real Estate at Franciscan University of Steubenville. “We beat our expectations again, like we did last year, so thousands and thousands of people. I think we had over 10,000 skaters, and 15,000-20,000 people coming to the area for the rink.”
The rink offered traditional open skating, parties, and “pond hockey” opportunities, which Rook attributed to its success and strong community ties.
“I think it’s a great place for the community. We really had a lot more regional visitors this year,” Rook said. “I think part of that is just the homey-feeling, the Hallmark-type atmosphere that we have, especially at night with the lights on. The restaurants around, free parking, all that kind of stuff really makes it a great place for families to come.”
Rook emphasized the positive impact the rink has had on the local economy, particularly for nearby businesses.
“The restaurants here at the square just did phenomenal. Jimmy John’s is brand new, they did great. Rubi’s Pizza, The Harp & Habit, they just really saw a surge in their sales with the rink right here,” Rook said. “Everything from hot chocolate to drinks and pizza, just a great atmosphere for people coming to the area.”
As the season concludes, Rook assured that the square will continue to offer family-friendly attractions, with plans to bring back the turf field and host concerts and events this summer. The rink’s last day is Sunday from noon to 7 p.m., with operations set to resume in mid-November 2025.
