Spain braces for a dramatic weather shift, again as the Spanish national weather agency AEMET has issued warnings, with heavy rain, snowfall, and fierce storms threatening to put a dampener on weekend plans across the country.

Storm clouds gather

After weeks of unusually settled conditions, a fierce weather front is charging towards Spain, bringing a wintry mix of lashing rain, thunderstorms, and even snow at higher altitudes. The shift in conditions could see large parts of the country plunged back into January-like temperatures, forcing sunseekers to swap sunglasses for scarves.

Experts at AEMET have sounded the alarm, predicting a widespread deluge that could trigger weather alerts in several regions. The agency warns that this sudden change in conditions could mark a sharp contrast to the recent dry spell, bringing intense downpours, howling winds, and treacherous conditions on the roads.

Heavy rain, snow, and storms on the cards

According to AEMET, the front will sweep across Spain, leaving a trail of chaos in its wake. Heavy rain is expected to drench much of the country, particularly in the north and along coastal areas. The Pyrénées and other mountain ranges are bracing for snowfall, with levels dropping to between 1,300 and 2,200 metres. In some areas, icy blasts could see conditions deteriorate rapidly, with travel disruption highly likely.

Forecasters have warned that storms could strike along the Cantabrian and Galician coasts, where fierce winds may whip up the seas. The Balearic Islands will also be in the firing line, with the front expected to reach the archipelago by the end of the day. Meanwhile, in the Canary Islands, a relative calm will persist, though some light dust clouds and cloudy intervals may linger.

Brace for a weekend washout

For those hoping for a sun-kissed weekend, the outlook isn’t bright. The Atlantic front moving in will not only bring soaking rains but also cause temperatures to tumble. AEMET predicts a widespread dip in daytime highs, particularly in inland areas, while the mercury could fall to near-freezing levels in mountain regions overnight.

Wind warnings are also in place, with strong gusts expected in the north-east, particularly around Ampurdan and the Pyrenees, where powerful blasts could make conditions even more perilous. The shift in air pressure will see winds swinging from southerly to north-westerly as the system barrels through.

Spanish winter fights back

It’s a reminder that despite glimpses of spring, winter isn’t quite ready to loosen its grip. Meteorologists warn that the post-front instability could lead to scattered showers well into next week, particularly in the western half of Spain.

So, whether you’re living in Spain or just visiting, it might be time to rethink that outdoor brunch – or at least bring an umbrella!
