The photo contest “My Bird/Mans putns” has been organized for more than 20 years to stimulate public interest in exploring nature and birdwatching.

Dmitrijs Boiko, ornithologist and Head of the Museum’s Zoology Department, pointed out that due to the warm winter in Latvia this winter, bird species that are otherwise rare in Latvia have been observed. There are also birds that are now starting to breed. For example, some owls already have eggs in their nests, especially in urban areas where the climate is milder, but the organizers remind you that it is forbidden to approach nests and chicks to get a shot.

Boiko hoped that this year’s photo competition would attract entries with a variety of bird scenes, especially birds in motion – in flight, hunting, or other unusual situations.

The competition is open to wild bird images taken in Latvia between January 1 2024 and March 20 2025. The photos will be judged in four age groups – children (up to 12 years), young people (13-20 years), adults (21-49 years) and the “50+” group. Each participant is allowed to enter the competition with 1-3 color printed photographs (30×40 cm).

Entries must be submitted by March 20 at the Museum or by post. The winners will be awarded and the photo exhibition of the best entries will open on Friday, April 11.
