TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The African American Legacy Project worked with community partners and supporters to host a exhibition celebrating the history of the Dorr Street Business District on Saturday.
Robert Smith is the director of the non-profit whose goal is to honor cultural heritage and help with economic growth.
“We are talking about jobs, we are talking about new businesses coming in, we are talking about expanding cultural opportunities,” Smith said.
Smith said the event featured displays and images of the Dorr Street Business District from decades ago so people could have an amazing experience.
The director has worked with city leaders to make a plan. He says the planning commission has agreed to help his nonprofit define a district and that they are working to identify stakeholders and long-term partners.
Smith said his idea has the support of a few Toledo City Council members including George Sarantou, who attended the exhibition.
“The neighborhood really needs economic development,” Sarantou said. “That means more jobs, more services, more people living over here. If we can get this area to have those stores return, this will be wonderful for the all of the people that live over here.”
Smith said the next steps in the revitalization plan include working with the planning commission to solidify details, and then making calls to businesses to create some partnerships.
