The Philadelphia Eagles have not made an official public announcement, but reports Sunday about the team’s decision on whether to visit the White House after winning the Super Bowl already had folks fuming.
Others, of course, were delighted.
The reports are that the Eagles will, in fact, skip out on visiting Donald Trump. And, if that is the case, that would be no surprise because things got ugly in 2018 when their trip to the White House got cancelled at the last minute.
“The Philadelphia Eagles are unable to come to the White House with their full team to be celebrated tomorrow,” Trump said back then. “They disagree with their President because he insists they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.
“The Eagles wanted to send a smaller delegation, but the 1,000 fans planning to attend the event deserve better,” he added. “These fans are still invited to the White House to be a part of a different type of ceremony – one that will honor our great country, pay tribute to the heroes who fight to protect it, and loudly and proudly play the National Anthem. I will be there at 3:00 p.m. with the United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus to celebrate America.”
The Eagles also didn’t sound overly committed to the idea of visiting Trump in the moments after their win over the Chiefs. So, again, it would not be a surprise if they have chosen not to make the trip. But, also, it should be noted once more that there has been no official announcement.
So, where did the reports come from? Well, per USA Today, the U.S. Sun cited an anonymous source “at the Eagles,” as saying that the conversation about the visit had already occurred and the team had chosen not to attend.
“SAME,” right-wing influencer Megyn Kelly wrote while reposting a user who said they would not have supported the Eagles in the Super Bowl had they know they would make the move. “GO F YOURSELVES EAGLES. My husband is a fan so I got onboard but F this BS.”
There were plenty more folks from the MAGA world echoing those sentiments with colorful language, but there were also plenty cheering on the move.
“Is it true the Eagles turned down their invite to the White House???” the rapper Plies wrote on X. “If so they got a new fan in me!!!! Fly Eagles Fly!!!!”
We will see if the team has a public comment on the matter come Monday.
