So if I’m rich enough to have a manor I can get it repaired for free and make charity pay for it… how do you walk around in public…. Guess you don’t need to since you got all the fucking land…
it’s a bit misleading isn’t it. the national trust will still own the manor however they are handing back day to day management to the family.
the question why national trust members will now have have to pay for access is still outrageous and should be questioned.
So the manor was **Gifted** to the national trust on the condition that the family could live there for 300 years and manage it as a visitor attraction, while the trust pays for it’s maintenance.
It definitely sucks that the members who paid for the repair no longer get anything back, and maintenance isn’t cheap, but you need to factor in that it it’s probably worth over £20 million pounds and the national trust has gained revenue from it.
It is an apparent scam attempt by a rich family to appropriate ordinary people’s money. The National Trust should be charging the full cost of renovation payable immediately or through monthly installments/rent from this family.

For anyone who was interested in which manor.
entitled blue club members are always the biggest benefit scroungers
Context:
“The National Trust acquired ownership of the property from the Throckmortons in 1946 with a hereditary lease that granted the family residency and the right to manage it as a visitor attraction for 300 years.
However, in 2005 the charity took over the running of the 15th-century manor on a short-term agreement, extended annually since, and has invested heavily in its redevelopment.”
so.. they pocket the income and national trust pockets the maintenance and upkeep? seems like a good deal
The national trust was originally set up to keep people in their stately homes, doing so by taking over ownership and paying for repairs whilst the family remained.
In 1946 the alternative was that the contents were sold, the roof was taken off and the house was left to rot, and that’s what happened to hundreds of houses which are now lost forever. The good news for people whinging about this deal is that in 2025 the Trust will not consider taking on a house without a huge endowment so they can be comforted by the thought of Mentmore Towers, Troy House, Ruperra Castle, and many others continuing to slide into ruin despite the existence of a charity with revenues of £600mn, the stated aim of which is to “promote the permanent preservation for the benefit of the Nation of lands and tenements (including buildings) of beauty or historic interest”.
Visited this place during restorations. What a shit show. Pointless visit. Ill be dismayed if i visit again and have to pay extra
