When Scotland failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2023, Gibson was one of the few players able to come out and describe the squad’s disappointment after a tough and testing game in goal.

She had to watch on from the bench in Helsinki when their fate was sealed in December against Finland, having been replaced with Eartha Cuming’s as the country’s number one.

When asked, given she sat out the final three games of Martinez-Losa’s reign, whether she welcomed the fresh start under McArdle, she said: “Yes, 100%.

“Ultimately, performance-wise, we failed on numerous occasions of getting to major tournaments, which is what we’re judged on. We’ve got a transitioning squad at the moment – there’s opportunities for people to grab.”

The Dutch arrive ranked 10th in the world, 14 places above the Scots, having drawn their opener 2-2 at home to a German side who are third behind the United States and Spain.

The last time Scotland entertained the Netherlands just over a year ago in the first edition of the Nations League, the visitors won by a single goal at Hampden.

“It’s another opportunity for us to go out and be a Scottish team that’s hard to break down and hard to beat,” Gibson added. “I think we’ve maybe lost that a little bit over the last few years, that kind of resilience in games.
