Hurley maker has to close business

  1. Isn’t there a company that makes hurls from bamboo? Been a long time since I swung a hurl but I have seen people say they are just as good.

  2. Isn’t this Joe Canning’s family company? Hard to lose with such a tradition and history in the game.

  3. It’s an awful pity as Hurley making is an art in itself. But with ash rot they are all going to have to adapt and change to survive in the coming years.

  4. Am I the only one delighted that a Hurley maker who makes Hurleys wrote a statement that long regarding Hurleys and Hurley manufacture, without calling it a hurl 🤣

  5. Someone should be held accountable for allowing ash dieback infected plants to be imported into Ireland. Hundreds of thousands of years worth of tree growth is currently being wiped out by this fungus, as well as all the ecological benefits and biodiversity, and of course, eventually the art of Hurley making, from Irish grown timber at least.

Ash imports should have been banned in the 1990s, when the disease was already widespread in Europe. Instead we did nothing and are losing one of the few native large tree species on the island.

Terrible to see this crowd go out of business. Regrettably I believe this is just the beginning for traditional hurl makers.
