  1. Sir Keir Starmer’s deal to cede the Chagos Islands to Mauritius has received a significant boost before the prime minister’s visit to the US in the form of a “very supportive” intervention by Narendra Modi.

The Indian prime minister was among the first foreign leaders to be invited to the White House and enjoys a close relationship with President Trump. Sources close to negotiations are confident Modi would have voiced his support for the deal in the meeting with Trump. “The Indians are the ones who have been pushing it all along,” a source said.

Although Ukraine and European security will dominate the agenda when the prime minister travels to Washington this week, Starmer is also hoping to receive Trump’s blessing for the Chagos deal. British officials believe an agreement could be signed within weeks
