It should be understood that the problem is not simply Mr. Johnson’s remarks. It doesn’t even matter whether it was a gaffe or whether he actually plan to make them. The point is that they understand *why* he made them: because he thinks this is what his audience (i.e. his political supporters and voters) want to hear. And they did, as seen by the response.
And that brings this whole thing onto an entirely new level. It goes from “Mr. Johnson is a buffoon” to “the Conservative party and its members still see us as the equivalent of an invader and still persist in painting us as the enemy”, which then prompts the question: can we actually trust these people? Can we separate the rhetoric they use among their own and towards their voters from the political and diplomatic policies they will pursue? If they really hold to such a warped view of politics and diplomacy, can we even assume they will act pragmatically or even rationally?
