MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Representation of aerospace and defense at the state capitol shows just a fraction of its meaning to Alabama’s economy and history.
It all began in 1909 when the Wright brothers open a flight school in Montgomery.
Years later, in 1958, the first satellite to orbit the earth was launched in Huntsville.
“Alabama literally felt the impact of our state’s contribution to the space program,” said Gov. Kay Ivey.
Now, aerospace and defense is a multi-billion-dollar industry. In 2024 Alabama formed a new space council in an effort attract even more activity to the state.
“Space command belongs in Alabama its rightful home,” said Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth.
Previously, the secretary of the air force named Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville the best place for space command headquarters.
The Biden administration chose to keep it in Colorado, but Senator Tommy Tuberville has said a move to Alabama is still possible.
In the meantime, state leaders are commending the industry that has flourished from Huntsville to Mobile.
“Alabama built the most powerful rocket in world history twice we are going to continue to secure Alabama aerospace and defense for the next 100 years,” said Ainsworth.
