Polish power supply company, PGE announced two milestones in construction of gas-fired power plants. Both are important projects for the low-carbon energy transition.

Huge CCGT assembled in Rybnik

At the construction site of the power plant in Rybnik, the assembly of a gas turbine has been completed, announced the PGE. The new CCGT will produce about 593 megawatts electric (Mwe).

Dariusz Marzec PGE“The gas-fired power plant, worth about 3.6 billion złoty (870 million euros), is currently one of the largest energy projects in the country,” said Dariusz Marzec, President of the Management Board of PGE Gruop. “It will generate electricity for 2 million customers in Poland.”

The transports and installation of the gas turbine were among the most demanding logistics operations in the energy sector. The turbine weighing almost 390 tons, travelled over 500 kilometres on the way to Rybnik. Whit this step the project is almost 60 percent ready.

It is one of the largest devices of this type in Europe, which from 2027 will ensure a secure supply of electricity.

“Hot start-up” in Bydgoszcz

The Bydgoszcz II Combined Heat and Power Plant is at a more advanced stage. The so-called “hot start-up” of a new, low-emission heat source has begun, and the first synchronization of the unit with the power grid took place last week, announced the PGE today. The commissioning of the investment is planned for the second quarter of 2025.

“This is the second stage of the transformation of Bydgoszcz CHP towards low-emission heat generation in Bydgoszcz, which will allow two of the four currently operating coal-fired boilers to be shut down,” said Grzegorz Krystek, President of the Management Board of PGE Energia Ciepła, member of PGE Group.

The total capacity of the five new gas-fired units will be 52.6 MWe and 50.8 megawatts thermal (MWt).
