Influenza cases were recorded in all 10 monitoring areas last week. The highest influenza intensity was recorded in the Jēkabpils region.

There were also eight reports of deaths in patients with confirmed influenza infection. All patients were over 50 years of age, all had multiple co-morbidities and risk factors.

The SPKC said that to protect against severe influenza, state-funded influenza vaccination is now available to everyone. Health authorities can use their stock of vaccines to vaccinate patients outside the risk groups.

Flu vaccination is still recommended, as the spread of influenza can continue until the end of May, but immunity can be established within 10 days of receiving the vaccine. Vaccination is especially recommended for seniors and people with chronic diseases. Vaccination is also recommended for those who are scheduled to undergo medical manipulations and hospital stays, the SPKC said.

While the incidence of influenza is increasing in Latvia, the incidence of Covid-19 is on a downward trend. Last week, 1,275 tests were carried out to confirm Covid-19, of which 25 were positive for SARS-CoV-2.

Last week, 50 patients with Covid-19 infection were treated in hospitals, 24 of them with the primary diagnosis of Covid-19. Four deaths of Covid-19 patients were also recorded.
