Mum told to ‘give up’ career to care for daughters

  1. The brutal reality is that they’d almost certainly be better off not working. Having a good friend with three autistic (1 non verbal) children and living in social housing, they’re seeing the same levels of income that would be expected for someone on £80k pa all without the costs associated with having to work.

  2. If the issue is school holidays don’t mum and dad get enough annual leave to cover the holidays?
Why wasn’t dad told to give up his career?

  3. “Parents told to care for their children” – slow news day is it?!

  4. I really don’t like to just say “use all of your holidays to care for them”, because there is a fundamental issue with specialist childcare even ignoring the regular childcare problem.

But, with 2 special needs children, 1 of which needs 1 on 1 care a parent should be at home, or at least in seasonal or part time work.

Parents shouldn’t have to give up their lives for their kids but if you have 2 children with severe issues reasonable childcare options don’t exist outside these highly expensive £300 a day places. Honestly? £150 per child after you consider staff wages, rent, electric and water for 1 to 1 care?. For specialist care sounds pretty standard and expected.

The worst thing about this is the fact that this is why 1 worker household existed. Home maintenance, child care, cooking. It’s a full time job, if not more in these cases. It is also interesting how the father was almost never mentioned. He struggled just as much from the 1 line he’s mentioned in but his struggles are not documented. 1 of them should be at home. Whichever one makes the least, or cares for the children best or whatever.

It’s a failing in society that both feel burnt out but 1 needs to stay home.
