    Without the efforts of Nelson, Churchill and Wellington we would be a totally different country.

    It once again seems that we are not allowed to be proud of our history.

  13. Was it scrapped or was it changed and rotated out for maintenance or storage like the paintings in Parliament always have been?

    Edit… Also there are currently other pictures of Nelson hanging up, why are they still there if this is for nefarious reasons?

  14. For those who didn’t read, including the OP, they haven’t gotten rid of Nelson. There are a lot of pictures in parliament and a couple of the multitude of paintings of Nelson have been swapped out.

    Nelson is still being honoured as the hero he was, there are just other people who deserve recognition

    Nelson’s went onto abolish it.
    I wonder how much Yvette Cooper has done to reverse modern slavery in comparison?
    The Westminster elite are simply looking for new ways to venerate themselves as sadly this extremely expensive portrait of said minister proves.

  16. People really don’t like to read the articles, do they? They just like to rage at clickbait headlines.

    The paintings aren’t being “scrapped,” whatever that means. They’re being swapped out. As all paintings in parliament buildings always do. Paintings always get rotated in and out. This is nothing new.

  17. People here seriously think this is cultural vandalism or Orwellian.. Nothing from our history is being erased ffs. You’re still free to read as much about Nelson as you like, go to his column, or museums and galleries featuring him. 

    They’re trying to keep Parliament looking up to date. The same way people update their home’s furnishings. 

    No wonder Reform and Trump are so popular, people seem to want to be wound up by this crap.

    A spokesman said: “There have never been any plans to remove specific artworks, individuals or subjects from display or change the long-term sitting of Parliament’s works of art, and we do not recognise reports which say otherwise.

    “Reporting of where works of art are situated at a specific moment in time is not an accurate indication of policy, and the subjects referenced can still be found on display in a number of other locations on the estate.”

    So the paintings have been moved around, not removed. Now spot the people who didn’t read this BS article.

  19. The irony. If this is true that these paintings have been removed in some way due to the influence of the BLM it’s a good example of people not even know what they looking at whilst being offended.
    As far as I know, the Death of Nelson depicts a sailor believed to be George Ryan, he is seen, it has been suggested, pointing out where the shot that killed Nelson came from. He served as an Ordinary Seaman on Nelson’s ship The Victory. He was invalided to HMS Gladiator after serving in the Royal Navy for about 10 years.
    He is celebrated on the South face of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. He can be seen holding a musket, to the far left of Nelson himself.
    Seems a shame to removing a painting depicting a huge moment in the history of this country, for any reason, and Ironic if if it is for some kind of race related issue given that it removes the image of a black man who is a noted part of our Naval history.

  22. I mean, it’s hardly relevant to the times. I’m a big traditionalist but see the need to change with the times. The only thing that terrifies me is what they’ll replace it with. We have nothing modern even remotely of a similar significance to replace it. The closest thing would maybe be WW2 but can’t see them doing that. God help us

    How many people pissed off with this have actually seen these paintings!?
