Trial landing of a potential new aircraft. Second plane in the video is the regular(twice a day normally) Barra to Glasgow flight. I believe it’s the only commercial airport in the world that uses a beach for its runway. Obviously this has some disadvantages (salt water etc) but it has its advantages too, if the wind direction isn’t great for landing or taking off they can reposition the aircraft.

The vehicles in the distance will be people picking cockles to sell. (Mods:Already posted this but it didn’t upload for some reason so apologies if it appears twice)

  1. I remember seeing a job advert for the air traffic controller there. Advertised as a job where you can put your feet up a lot. I’d be livid if I got the job then they said “guess what, we have a new plane that means more flights!” 😂

  2. I’m weird, but taking this flight is a bucket list item for me. I love flying, I love Scotland, and I love remote locales, so all the various boxes are ticked here.

  3. I had a smoother landing there than on many a tarmac strip.

  4. Genuine question – why not use a seaplane instead of the beach? Seaplane could still land on a regular runway, but feels more versatile for the Barra end of things?

  5. That looked like absolute paradise until the lad in the hi-viz walked into the scene. Health and safety gone mad, Stuart.

  6. My first plane ride. 10 years old Barra to Glasgow.

  7. Imagine all the maintenance with that sand and salt.

  8. It’s fantastic and the colours of the water from above look tropical. The beautiful white crushed cockleshell beach is stunning.
