Bella-Rae Birch: Dog that killed toddler was legal American Bully XL

  1. Probably won’t be legal for much longer then.

Less cynically, we need to move away from Breed Specific Legislation and towards owners being completely responsible for their dog’s actions.

  2. Don’t get me wrong, dogs, even dangerous ones are cute, I love dogs too but all these dangerous dogs should be illegal to own. I understand when trained properly they can be pretty obedient and safe but even then, it’s a risk, they’re wild animals, they can have a random outburst. And there’s many youtube videos to prove it and other material.

Seriously, let’s use some sense now. I’m aware some dangerous breeds were banned but that was only because they had body counts on them. Why do we need something to happen like this for the UK to ban. Priti patel is very enthusiastic to ban anonymous online accounts because she gets called out for her filth and gets called mean words online but stuff like this?

Add on: Material perhaps not the word, what I mean is research and that sort of stuff to show what breeds are dangerous etc.

  3. The family just got the dog that mauled the little girl to death. There have been plenty of verifiable instances where this type of dog goes off and maims or kills it’s owners or others and it’s been banned in various places for good reason.

The last thoughts of the little girl was probably unimaginable pain and horror. What the hell were the parents thinking?

  4. I’m familiar with the area this attack took place and I have to say a lot of these dogs are bought as tough status symbols for the owner. Real shame when this happens as a consequence.

  5. “American Bully XL”? So, essentially 95% a pitbull but with a different name so it is “technically” not a banned breed?

This reminds me of a phenomenon in the 90s when drug dealers sold slightly tweaked versions of illegal drugs in order to get around the law. They would sell something that technically wasn’t yet illegal, but was so similar chemically to existing drugs, it had essentially the same effect. That was fixed with the [Psychoactive Substances Act 2016](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoactive_Substances_Act_2016). It is probably time to introduce something similar for dogs.

  6. What the fuck were they thinking getting a dog like that with a toddler around? 17 months is only just out of babyhood. Bet they got him from some backyard breeder on Gumtree, too.

  7. Buying an adult dog of unknown provenance (1) of a “bully breed” (2) and letting it interact with your toddler (3) after less than a week of ownership (4).

I count at least four huge risk factors. They should be held legally responsible for that level of recklessness.

  8. Read on the daily mail (I know) that the father bought the dog off a friend a week ago intending to “stud it out for £2k each puppies”. Take that for what you will but the heck were those parents were thinking?

So many wrong decisions. Why buy an unknown dog of that breed when you have a 17 mo child? Perhaps wanted to make a quick buck out of breeding the animal and not taking care of it, the puppies etc and just exacerbating the issue of poorly bred dogs.

I love dogs. Had my last dog for 16 years and recently adopted a rescue dog. But even I’d be quite nervous getting any dog if I had a child of that age.

  9. There the same type of dog as a banned breed and developed from a banned breed. The breed got let off on a technicality.

  10. I had a great Dane. When baby was born he never left her side. Wherever the baby was he was there. Freinds thought I was insane leaving a 12 stone dog with a toddler in the garden. I think the trick is to buy the dog, train the dog then introduce it to the kids. Your kid will never be safer.
Fun story : left dog and pram outside a shop. Went halfway home without them.
Dog gave me a withering look when I got back for them.

  11. Can’t even imagine losing a family member/child to someone else’s dog. The UK, IMO, is full of weird dog owners with anthropomorphic attitudes towards their dog, whether it’s a little sod of a chihuahua or a big bad bully. Got worse in the pandemic. A dog is for life not just for furlough.

  12. Any dog breed that looks that much like the fuckers out of Ghostbusters should be spayed and snipped to extinction.

  13. Legal my ass

That breed attacked my partners dog last year. If it can attack another dog unprovoked it can attack a human

    Ban them all

  14. Based on the law, the parents broke the law.

Additionally, IMHO, that dog was new and didn’t know the child belonged under it’s protection… puppy before child or at the same time. These were obviously not dog people… and it is sad at every angle for every single person involved. Ignorance, sadly, may likely explain their actions, but it does not excuse them. It pains me to be this honest… but one must be honest in order for us all to grow and learn.

And may that tortured childs tiny soul rest comfortable.

  15. A quick litmus test, do you want a dog that looks “ard as fook”? Then you probably shouldn’t have a dog, a cat or any other lifeform that depends upon you. The animals breed is irrelevant.

  16. So it’s a Pitbull.

How many children and people are going to have to be disfigured for life or killed before the government steps up and does what it should have done all along and bring in a blanket ban on all bull terriers?

  17. I own (and have owned) large dogs for years, I’m a huge dog lover – probably prefer dogs to most humans.

I trust my dogs and I also believe there’s more bad owners than bad dogs.

But I’d never leave a child (or a stranger) unattended with them. All it takes is one incident and a life is lost / a child permanently scarred.

  18. Have these been bread to circumvent bans on pit bulls? I imagine dogs have been bread in the UK to get around bans.
