Rishi Sunak has denied his family is profiting from Vladimir Putin’s regime in an awkward exchange over the Russian invasion.

The British chancellor was asked about reports of “family links” to Russia, which has been hit by sanctions over the war being waged in eastern Europe.

It comes after Mr Sunak told businesses to “think carefully” about making any investments in the country that would benefit Mr Putin’s regime as firms scramble to cut ties.

The chancellor was quizzed on Sky News about reports of his wife’s stake in Infosys – a company founded by her billionaire entrepreneur father – and claims the firm operates in Moscow and has links to a large Russian bank.

“Are you giving advice to others that you are not following in your own home?” he was asked on Thursday.

Mr Sunak replied: “I’m an elected politician and I’m here to talk to you about what I’m responsible for. My wife is not.”

He also brushed off the Sky News presenter saying it appeared his family could potentially be “benefitting from Putin’s regime”.

“I don’t think that is the case. As I said, the operations of all companies are up to them,” the chancellor said.

“We have put in place significant sanctions and all the companies that we are responsible for are following those – as they rightly should – sending a very strong message to Putin’s aggression.”

  2. I mean, this is a nothing-story frankly. Sunak himself has zero control over any investments his family has by design, so I’m not sure exactly what the presenter is looking for here?

Those are the vetting standards for security clearance. It’s not even that high a clearance for spouses to be checked out as well, in terms of their finances, affiliations, political ideology etc.

It just seems like such bullshit that he can say his wife and her family has nothing to do with his job.

I could literally make more money working at Lidl for a tenth of the stress of what I actually do and I could also make money from hobbies without having to disclose where my additional money comes from to the professional standards department.

Idk, I’m just ranting because of this ass and his stupid smug face.

  4. I just saw this cos my dad sent it to me, what a scumbag he is. I really really am sick of this shit guys, I can’t express how fed up I am with these government types telling us one thing and doing the other. I am totally fed up with it. Really fucking sick.

  5. The world’s wealthiest have played both sides of most conflicts throughout history

It shouldn’t really be a surprise they’re doing it again now

  6. Quick correction, he did quite categorically NOT deny his family is profiting from Putin’s regime, he said he doesnt know if they are.

Important for when the inevitable reveal that they are comes out and he points out that he never said they weren’t…

  7. No he didn’t, he said it was his wife’s business, then said he knew nothing about the company because he had ko connection.
Because its impossible to know anything about any company without being directly fiscally involved.

  8. Are your politicians required to reveal the sources of their income and amount, you know family businesses, points of investment? Yank here.

  9. This must be the easiest grift ever, with these lot. Not smart enough to do actual work and create things. Provide value to the world. But smart enough to rip off people who are “*below*” them.

What a bunch of Liar. Jesus these people are so fucking dodgey its unreal.

  10. They have not severed ties with the Russian arm of InfoSys, so they are at least still willing to do business with Russia. His father in law is a supporter of Modi, a Putin sympathiser, he will put his business above human rights and the war in Ukraine. How much they stand to benefit is up for debate, the point is that InfoSys is still very happy to do business with Russia and is ignoring the rest of the world when it comes to sanctions.

  11. It’s a bit of weak link, relatively speaking, and business assets are not that easy to dispose of quickly. It’s also a company in India, of which his wife is a citizen.

I’ve probably got more links to Moscow than he does.
