The two largest coal companies in Russia, “Mechel” and “Raspadskaya,” incurred a net loss of around 50 billion rubles in 2024. Unlike oil and gas, which Europe continues to purchase, coal has been subject to a total embargo, and coal companies have been added to the US sanctions lists.
