The recruitment event organized by the city of Helsinki for internationals was a shitshow and total humiliation for participants. I feel disgusted that I even promoted the event. So many disappointed participants. There was very few recruiters, and the message from the city was: learn Finnish. Stop misleading and organizing these events if you cannot offer participants any job opportunities other than in cleaning and construction! What a shame!

hello, is construction job bad job?
This is suddenly quite funny.

So by your logic people don’t need any education and local language to get a decent job? Where in the world has that been the case?
Self promotion of participants at the stage part was quite awkward not gonna lie. It felt cringe. Application should be enough. A stage show is not needed.
(No offence) I would learn other language, if I could migrate to another country. It is kinda… like a good etiquette. You show everyone that you do your best and really would communicate with local people. Besides, Finnish is not a hard language, and it sounds quite nice. Learning other languages is even funny (like puhelin = telephone, and in many languages the word for telephone sounds more or less like telephone).
I’m not a Finnish, but I like their culture and I’m sure it deserves to be spread, especially considering that there are just approximately 5-6 million Finnish people.
OP I know why you’re feeling disappointed. But remember that Finland does not have enough jobs at the moment. Finnish companies do not want foreign knowledge workers, for most of them foreigners destroy the work environment (because of incapability to speak Finnish fluently like a Finnish person, also because they prefer Finns over foreigners). And the past, present & future governments in Finland want to accumulate cheap labors that do not cost anything. So it’s only natural that the only sectors that come to these events are the one Finnish society prefers foreigners to work in; cleaning and construction. Also these companies are in those events just for data collection. They’re not necessarily there to hire people.
People can down vote however they like. But this is the reality.
I highly recommend Espoo Career Club
What’s the problem with the “learn Finnish” message? Sounds like a no-brainer…
Maybe it was outlook of your place at a job market.
I’m an MCSE in TCPIP, with 30 years of Finnish language and native English. There was nothing in my field.
I’ve been to a different one in my area and yep, can agree waste of time and effort.
Lovely people though trying to help but they get flooded with people all trying to find a job from all different walks of life and backgrounds which makes its very very difficult to even filter through the participants. I think they run those events to waste more public money, because it’s not helpful.
Yes, Finnish will be needed for working in any job in Finland and if it’s not needed for a tech job daily life you will probably need to know some.
Don’t put the advertisement poster in English if you want fluent Finnish speakers. Stop wasting peoples time even make it in Finnish and explain you need a B1, B2, fluent whatever in Finnish to participate.
They need to stop beating the drum of bs here
– If you have no jobs for English speakers learning Finnish stop saying you need “talent”
– If you aren’t willing to employee non-Finnish people just make it the rule only Finnish
There is a event coming up about the same thing and it will be the same topics they talked about forever. Language requirements, not employing immigrants, blah blah blah … more resources wasted.

It is disaster to suggest that Finnish language skill is needed in job market in Finland, indeed. 🤦🏼♂️
Ok, gonna play the devils advocate, but telling people to learn the language of the country should be normal, considering its the language you should learn since your gonna be needing it to really live there, and its hard or near impossible to offer lot of jobs if the people are largely unable to properly communicate in finnish, since it will largely limit the jobs they can properly do and the people they can interact with well. Customer service related jobs are instantly out if you dont speak finnish and so are any jobs that require you to speak with finnish clients or coworker etc, even with english skills your usefullness is limited.

I highly doubt these kind of municipal money burning organizations (you know so some Pekka gets a salary) have a single educated job acceptance ever….
Half of the job seekers are useless for companies (not judging anyone but even the backgrounds doesn’t fit). These events are waste of time if you are educated.
Educated people needs to attend corresponding industry events, where at least you might have some chance….
I was a recruiter once at such event and what can I say 90% of people didn’t have previous experience or education. We anyway hired few people just to give them a chance and then when it was first work day they just didn’t show up 🥲 one overslept and then always would have excuse for coming late to work and another one came to the wrong office on his first work day and in general was not doing job properly.
So recruiters know that at such events usually there is nothing interesting to find . Those who agreed to come most likely hiring for low salary jobs such as cleaning , where any candidate will do basically.
You SHOULD learn Finnish
