Good afternoon everyone!

I’m moving to Latvia the next week for an ERASMUS internship. I was scrolling on X (former Twitter) and I found this post. The translation is “Homicide rate for each 100.000 habitants”. Why Latvian one is that higher? Is there any concern I should know about? I know is a statistic from 2022, but I got a little bit scared, as in my country it’s 0,6. Thank you and have a nice day!

  1. If you plan to drink with old guys and fight them to death, then you should be worried. If not, then no worries.

  2. Yeah, all babies are born with guns in their hands. One hand is replaced with a gun, actually.

  3. Its correct, but its safe. Number is high due to Latvia having a particular problem with homicides of women by family members or partners. That is connected with drinking problems within families.
Excluding that I think we are on par with European average.

  4. Avoid Origo pedestrian tunnels at night and you’ll be fine. This statistic is inflated by drunk losers fighting each other and then someone goes too far.

  5. Don’t worry, nothing to be worried about.

Latvia has one of the highest alcohol consumptions per person in the EU. Many households suffering from poverty consume a lot of alcohol. As a result, people do not control themselves under the influence and get violent.

  6. No, it is completely wrong, Latvian flag has wrong colour.

  7. Yes, unfortunately statistically Latvia has a lot of criminal and even Russia is safer.

  8. The difference is only on paper, in Latvia all cases get initially called homocides, and later classified as self defense or manslaughter or accidental deaths, in other eu countries only confirmed homocides are counted. That is where you get the difference, no avalaible data, but probably on par with LT and EE
