> “Did we get it right? Hell no. I said some dumb s—,” she said, which was met by laughter from the audience. “But I refuse to have my legacy be about some stuff linked together on the Internet when there were 24 cycles of changing the world. And I am so excited that I, and so many of us, have opened that door for others to follow.”
> “And now my 51-year-old, dimpled, cellulite-covered bigger tummy and 10 million times bigger titties is walking through that door that I opened with all of us behind us on that runway saying, ‘Baby, it’s just the beginning,’ “ she concluded to thunderous applause.
I am still waiting for the Tyra show to be uploaded. That show was wild.
You know what? Hell yeah.
So is an apology to the women coming or is she going to leave it at that? Does an apology set her up for lawsuits with the whole admission of wrongdoing thing?
This is a stupid headline, because it doesn’t at all reflect the general message of her speech.
I mean, it’s very of its time. Retroactively applying todays standards to old works is always dumb.
Thank goodness women are able to go back and say ‘hey I was wrong for this and I accept that ‘ instead of denying or justifying. I’ll back her up for the simple fact that I too have f***** up in the past and can own it. Nobody is perfect. We learn and grow.
On Cycle Six, there was a trans finalist! She did not make the top ten, thus she was edited out. That’s pretty progressive for 2005! Tyra and co. deserve some credit.
do agree but it’s fucked up when you force the models to make permanent/long lasting changes like shaving their teeth in order to stay in competition.
We were all rooting for you!
Lowkey that show was just as toxic as making the band.
TLDR:
“After I get called out for the myriad of horrible choices/things I did I want to seem like I am contrite.”
Ive criticized tyra and this show a LOTTTT over the years (and will continue to do so) but im gonna be honest a lot of the angry replies online to this speech give off the vibe that they haven’t actually seen the show and got most of their criticisms from random ppl online who were too young to even watch when it came out. Tyra has apologized several times for this show and has spoken in depth about the negative effects it had, so it is odd seeing ppl claim that she will “never” apologize. And one thing i will say that was decent about the show and tyra was that it really was progressive at that time for plus size and more “regular” looking women. There are plenty of real criticisms to be had so i dont understand why ppl focus on the ones that aren’t really applicable.
Cool, she still sucks
ANTM might not have been perfect but at the time it aired, it was probably the most progressive and most diverse casted show I watched on television. And I would argue it really set the foundation for the body positive movement in fashion in the 2010s. It proved people wanted to see models of different sizes, who had disabilities, and quirks.
It’s still my guilty pleasure
