This Wednesday, we wear pink.
The popular “Mean Girls” musical, based on the 2004 movie of the same name, will be showing at Pikes Peak Center next week, with performances Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
The movie follows new student Cady Heron as she navigates American high school after moving to Illinois from Africa. Cliques dominate the school, and Heron finds herself intertwined with a group of popular students nicknamed “the Plastics.”
“It’s good to be able to see that journey, and see how the audience kind of rides along with her,” said Tym Brown, who plays Principal Duvall in the musical.
As far as playing Mr. Duvall, Brown said it has let him explore a new kind of role, more of a parental figure.
“Mr. Duvall has been great to play,” Brown said.
“The role was famously portrayed by the comedic great Tim Meadows, and just to be able to kind of step into his shoes a little bit and have those comedic chops get to play on stage — it’s been really fun.”
Since its original release, “Mean Girls” has gained a near cultlike following. At performances, Brown enjoys seeing fans going all-out, dressing in pink as an ode to the line, “On Wednesdays, we wear pink.”
“It has like this whole following,” Brown said. “It’s always fun to see people dressed up in their pink and waiting for classic lines that they love to hear come across the stage, and we just have a lot of fun with the audience.”
And even though the show is filled with good laughs and witty musical numbers, Brown hopes the audience takes away something meaningful.
“I’m hoping that they can leave with some joy once they leave the theater, and also find some kind of message within the show, whether it be about friendships, or whether it be about sometimes standing alone and being your own person, or if it’s giving people grace — how sometimes we judge people without getting to know them, I hope that people leave with a message,” he said.
