I feel like this guy is on every panel show and people seem excited to see him like he's some sort of living legend. He seems… Fine? Are people really into him over there or does he just need work?

  1. I had absolutely no idea who he was before he started appearing on panel shows. I don’t get the fuss either. He’s certainly not a “big deal” unless I’m ignorant enough to have missed absolutely everything else he’s done in the public light over the years.

  2. He is by far and away the most overrated “artist” in the UK.

Banal and tedious, and living a good life of some poems he wrote and ‘performed’ that were mildly interesting 40 years ago.

The fact his career is enjoying somewhat of a resurgence Is frankly insulting to thousands of poets of genuine talent struggling to earn a living yet can’t get the breaks enjoyed by chances like him.

Perhaps I should be defending him as we’re similar ages, and we’re born and grew up in the same neighbourhood of Salford.

Good luck him for cashing in…. But I won’t be buying any tickets.

  3. Is it just me, or does he also look quite ‘creepy’? Perhaps it’s the limp, thin, and obviously dyed long hair or the fact that he always wears sunglasses indoors, which is normally the sign of a total dick.

I don’t like to judge on appearances, but something about him gives me the ick.

  4. JCC is a big deal among punks and Northerners. I rarely watch panel shows but my dad was a big fan of his since the 70’s so i’ve known about him all my life. Obviously its not very punk to be on WILTY and its a damn shame if he needs the money at his age but poetry isn’t a well paid art like tv jobs so I can’t begrudge him.

  5. You’re totally right, imho. He’s really cool and funny and like him a lot but there’s no reason he should be as well regarded as he is. The work is fine. It’s quite interesting sometimes. Tbh people know the name, not the work.
