  1. Thanks Apple and America, thanks to the European nation that will supply them.

  2. Well we’re not going to be getting F-35s or anything of the sort. All we need is reliable high-speed intercept and minimal deterrent capabilities. I’d bet money that they’ll end up with the Saab Gripen or the F-16 Viper.

The F-16s would be better for NATO interoperability and support, and given that we signed on to an Individually Tailored Partnership Programme with NATO last year, I’d say we’ll end up with the F-16s.

  3. How does it take 50 years to get a jet? Putin will be well dead by then.

  4. Fellers, I know a bloke in Walthamstow who’s the owner of a Gloster Meteor, it’s passed all its mandatory inspections this year and is fully approved for flight. He’s willing to sell it with a tank of fuel and some essential spares (filters and extra hydraulic lines) for €75k but he says you’ll have to find your own bullets. Lemino.

  5. Brilliant, delighted that this is finally happening. Hopefully we can return to the debate for the case for us to join NATO.

  6. I would have though less conventional weapons would be a better fit. Drones or the like.

  7. Hope one of the lads in Donegal gets the contract for the decal work.

Engines ripping, fannies dripping, Buckfast sipping

  8. 2bn for 1 plane that will be obsolete the second it’s bought. Watch this space

  9. Will they be picking up where they left off with 50 year old jets?

  10. The jet in the picture looks like some sort of optical illusion, like it’s built backwards.

  11. Bought the old one off the Wright brothers on the buy and sell.

  12. Can’t wait until the office of government procurement spends €445,000 on drinks holders or something.

    Wrists will be slapped.

  13. Anyone saying this is a waste of money are probably Russian trolls. Great investment and about time.

  14. Can we make sure they measure the hangers first, to make sure the new jets fit

  15. Do we have many lads trained to fly these things? Are we going to have import some for a while before we train some of our own.

  16. There was a discussion here few days ago on a same topic. One of the soldiers in Irish army can’t get a new camo uniform which is ripped and few years old until 2026. They told him to go to tailor and get himself a new one from his own pocket 🤦🏻‍♂️

Navy is in state of disrepair and disaster overall. Retention is all time low. What are we taking about here people…this will thrown money into nothing.

  17. Now remember lads. You need 3 quotes and then pick the most economically advantageous tender

  18. Could we not just stick a few sidewinders on that yoke and save an absolute fortune?

  19. That headline summary had me briefly believe that they were planning to buy the first one in 50 years time.

I mean considering our record with big infrastructure plans, looking at you Metro, it would be quite believable🤷

  20. I think fighter jets are cool to but this is the most fur coat and no knickers scheme I have heard of in a while. There are a lot of basic and cost effective defensive equipment we could do with, never mention the manpower and infrastructure problems the defence forces have.

  21. We’re getting a handful of jets and already the comments are arguing about who we should invade first.

  22. This may be an unpopular opinion but I think this is a waste of money. I’m 100% pro increasing our defence and contributing more to a central EU fund for production, but we completely lack the expertise or scope to maintain these long term. We’d be far better off paying the French to deploy a small squadron here or however unpalatable it may sound the brits. They could still provide some training to Irish pilots.

  23. The eurofighter would be perfect for us. 100% EU designed and built and would offer amazing co-ordination abilities with the uk. The gripen is expensive for its capabilities and relies on us engines making the rafale a better 2nd pick for us imo

  24. Well that thing looks like it’s 50 years old so……..

  25. Headline says it all about the state of our defence forces
