Kate Middleton and her kids are joining in a longstanding royal family tradition. The Princess of Wales and her kids Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6 are apparently following in Prince William’s footsteps … or should we say (if Google Translate is on our side) his troed.
The Prince of Wales and many royals before him have worked to learn Welsh, given the throne’s proximity to Wales. The country in the United Kingdom is just to the west of England, and for diplomatic reasons (and sheer decency), the royal family has historically picked up Welsh. Which is why Middleton and her kids are reportedly now learning the language too … on Duolingo.

The relatable mom and her kiddos are apparently on the beloved language-learning app, per GB News. Can you believe it? Apparently there’s no stuffy language tutor for the royal family. There are the hilarious characters from Duolingo instead. It seems like the app’s owl mascot did not need to fake its own death with this astounding news right around the corner! If sticking to my Duolingo streak means I will basically be a princess-in-training … count me in!
Prince William recently showed off his conversational Welsh skills at a royal engagement.
“Heddiw, ar Ddydd Gŵyl Dewi, rydym yn dod at ein gilydd i ddathlu Cymru ei hanes, ei diwylliant, a’i phobl anhygoel,” the dad of three said in Welsh. “O’i golygfeydd anhygoel i’w hiaith, mae Cymru yn parhau i ysbrydoli. Heddiw, rydym yn dathlu popeth sy’n hudol am Gymru.”
This reportedly translates to: “Today, on St David’s Day, we come together to celebrate Wales, its history, its culture and its incredible people. From its breathtaking landscapes to its language, Wales continues to inspire. Today, we will celebrate everything that is magical about Wales.”

Nicely done, Prince William. And nicely done Duolingo if it’s true that the famed owl helped the future monarch too.
Middleton following the royal family’s tradition of learning Welsh comes on the heels of a royal expert revealing that she nixed another tradition.
“[She] has put her foot down and insisted there will be no blooding for her children,” royal author Tom Quinn wrote in an excerpt from his upcoming book, Yes Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants.
As in, she will not allow her kids’ faces to be smeared with the blood of the first animal they hunt and kill. And while we know the ritual is meaningful and sacred in many cultures — and has been a longstanding tradition for the royal family — we also understand why Middleton would be grossed out.
Instead, she and her kiddos will stick to less gory pastimes and keep perfecting their Welsh. And who knows, maybe they will even add another language from the Commonwealth into the mix.
These relatable moments show that Kate Middleton may be a royal mom — but she’s a regular mom too.
