OKLAHOMA CITY — Senator Paul Rosino’s bill to enhance the aerospace industry passed out of the Senate Aeronautics and Transportation Committee on Monday.

“With today’s committee approval, we are one step closer to making Oklahoma a prime destination for aerospace companies and innovators,” said Senator Rosino. “I look forward to continuing this momentum as the bill moves through the legislative process.”

Senate Bill 912 moves the Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority (OSIDA) under the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA), but OSIDA will keep their responsibilities and statutory powers.

The bill will add two new board members to the Aerospace and Aeronautics Commission that will be appointed by the Senate Pro Tem and Speaker of the House.

The Aerospace and Aeronautics Commissioners will also become board members and will handle managing OSIDA’s statutory duties.

The combination of these organizations is to create a better environment for space industry growth at both the Air and Spaceport campus in western Oklahoma and across the rest of the state.

“The passage of SB 912 in committee is a strong signal that Oklahoma is ready to take the next step in aerospace and space exploration,” Sen. Rosino said. “Oklahoma’s aerospace and aviation industries have seen exponential growth and will continue to advance under the leadership at ODAA. However, when it comes to space, Oklahoma is currently underperforming, despite having ample resources and assets. Making these organizational changes will allow the Oklahoma Aerospace and Aeronautics Commission to apply their successful strategies to the space sector, further advancing our state and fostering economic growth, creating jobs, and positioning our state as a leader in space exploration.”

Senate Bill 912 is meant to encourage private sector partnerships, expand aerospace technology development, and better Oklahoma’s spaceport infrastructure potential.

The bill will go to the full Senate for further consideration.
