As Ukraine and the US reportedly reach an agreement on a joint exploitation of Ukraine’s critical minerals, FRANCE 24 takes a closer look at exactly which minerals can be found in Ukraine and why they are so crucial to the US economy. However, a number of obstacles will make it difficult for the US to fully profit from the country’s deposits, as we explain in this edition.

  12. Funny how the mineral maps keep changing throughout this conflict. Just a month ago, there were claims that the Eastern parts of Ukraine held half of all the valuable minerals but now this map shows that there are hardly anything in Eastern Ukraine. Furthermore, the map is now showing a lot less “rare earth minerals” than they did before. Let’s be honest here: if Ukraine was truly rich in rare earth minerals, they would not be selling cheap wheat and corn to the world for the past several decades.

  15. Now Europe has to think it through, how can they focus on their own security. Because, each country will think of its own skin at the time of fire. So Europe has to be united and grow. Increase its own Defence and IT industry, along with other industries. Also focus on Greenland to at least keep it in Europe and away from Trump's prying eyes

It is now more important than ever for China and Russia supported by fellow BRICS and SCO countries to resist and curtail the global economic and military expansion of American led, bourgeoisie imperialism. American imperialist ruling elites have an insatiable appetite for wealth, power and influence that knows no limits and that will neither slow nor stop; unless forced to do so. Russia is curtailing an imperialist NATO expansion in Europe, China will need to curtail further imperialist expansion in East Asia. It must be made known globally, particularly to American led imperialism, that to declare war against either Russia or China is to declare war against both.

  30. Well the deal is clear by now . The money from the minerals must be invested in Ukraine and revenues from that 50 percent will go to the US .

    We see Zelesky makes us understand the Jews very well. Before the war, Russia warned Ukraine not to try to join NATO. But Zelesky tried to join NATO. He wanted to go to war with Russia. At the beginning of the war, Zelesky told Putin to negotiate with Netanyahu, which at that time Israel had nothing to do with. But why did he say that?! That makes us know right away that Zelesky did it for Israel. He wanted Russia to withdraw its troops from Syria. He was more concerned about the Golan Heights than Ukraine. In fact, Putin did not want to go to war with NATO because the Russian economy is much smaller than NATO. The Russian military is not very strong. The Russian fleet has only one old aircraft carrier. He is not a threat to the world. If the Ukrainian leader negotiates with Putin, stays neutral, and cooperates economically, Ukraine will be very rich because it has a lot of resources. But Zelesky is a Zionist. He cares more about Tel Aviv and Jerusalem than Kiev and the Ukrainian people. He does not care if Ukraine is destroyed or if the Ukrainian soldier is the last one left. He sold Ukraine to the USA. Both resources and concessions. Ukraine owes the USA a lot. And after the war ends, they will not have anything to give to the children of Ukraine. In just 3 years Zelesky become a billionaire. He recently bought a palace in England.He has billions in assets in USA and France. But the lives of more than a million Ukrainian soldiers who died on the battlefield will be of no use to the Ukrainian people.

Trump just made up the mineral deal to stop the war not to hit russia directly…this is not just about ukraine this can escalate to world war 3….the minerals in ukraine can also be found on other countries without being involve in the war….if i am the politicians in ukraine i will voluntarily give it to USA…giving security guarantee can just provoke russia and china to escalate the war…also there is not yet proof there is 500B worth of critical minerals in ukraine

  35. Why should President Zelenskyy sign a mineral deal with President Trump? When Canada signed a free trade agreement with President Trump, that is not worth the paper it's printed on.

  37. Why did Trump have to complicate matters with his greediness? The past amount US has given Ukraine should be declared unrecoverable because US did not discuss terms of repayment 'prior' for Ukraine to make an informed agreement. Biden gave it as a grant and it should be left as such. Future amounts should be interest free since it is wartime & humanitarian aid. The US govt for many years provoked Russia thereby leading to this war. US should pay for the war.

  39. Why does everyone think this is a done deal? Nothing has been dug up from the ground. There is no infrastructure to refine the mineral ores into usable materials, this will cost hundreds of $billions and take years to build out. There's no supply chain to transport the output to the US or anywhere else. Not to mention this is a transparent effort by Trump to topple Zelensky as punishment for not providing "dirt" on Biden's son before the 2020 election. This minerals deal is nothing but extortion, any resource proceeds belongs to the Ukrainian people and should be available to all at global market prices, just like all other commodities.

  40. Canada has the best 'ready-to-go' rare earth deposits … interesting. Close to another important manufacturing country known as the US of A.

  42. who is going to benefit from these minerals are the profits from them going to go back into the treasury or will the already wealthy companies are the only ones that will benefit ? (that they are already making record profits) and probably a kickback for some guys that don't really need more ?
