  1. For anyone confused by the lack of context provided – in classical and historical fairy tales and Arthurian mythology the concept of the “green man” is prevalent.

The Green Man is said to represent the true capacity for ultimate good; a reflection of nature in its purest form. The Green Man is often placed in opposition to modern society (modern back then at least) and the concepts of chivalry, honesty, and goodness which are really just vague and empty concepts we place upon ourselves as individuals in a society. A truly good man, a man with true honour is one unknown. It’s similar to some of the themes discussed by Plato in Republic; the ideal man/leader.

There are many fairytales where the Green Man is present and the exact details differ slightly from story to story but the basic concept is the same. The Green Knight (2021) is a fantastic retelling of these ancient tales and the movie is worth watching.
