The professions of hairdressers, car mechanics and electricians are the most popular apprenticeships in Luxembourg, Education Minister Claude Meisch has said.

Registration numbers had generally remained constant since 2018, Meisch said on Monday in response to a written parliamentary question from DP deputies Gilles Baum and Barbara Agostino.

In the period from 2018 up until this academic year, an average of 225 students each year began apprenticeship courses to become electricians, Meisch said, with 222 people currently enrolled in the training.

Even though the number of enrolments for apprenticeships as a hairdresser, mechanic or electrician is currently declining slightly, these three vocational training courses are among the most popular with over 200 interested people every year.

Training as a heating and plumbing engineer is the fourth-most popular apprenticeship in Luxembourg, the data shows.

Several industries have seen rising apprenticeship enrolments, the minister noted, included for beauticians, carpenters, tilers and painters and decorators, while the professions of locksmith and roofer had seen a decline.

The education ministry is currently not providing any special support for certain professions, Meisch emphasised, but he added that the government is in the process of developing a general programme to strengthen vocational training schemes.
